What you'll do...

Introduction

Walmart Global Technology is responsible for providing Technology solutions that support Walmart, Inc's business globally. Edge Infrastructure Organization is part of Walmart Global Technology that provides Infrastructure Services across various technology capabilities like Edge Computing, Networking, Global Wide Area Networks, Mobility Solutions (including Enterprise Rugged devices, Bring Your Own Device, and Corporate Owned Personally Managed Devices) for Walmart, Inc. worldwide. Walmart operates over 5,500 retail locations in the US and over 11,000 across the globe. These stores and clubs are supported by a supply chain network of over 300 Distribution Centers (DC) and e-Commerce Fulfillment Centers (FC). Operating this complex network of stores, clubs, DCs, and FCs for our Edge location today presents some unique scaling challenges that you will not experience in most other places.

We are looking for a Senior Manager experienced in leading, developing, and inspiring a team of highly talented system engineers. The candidate should also have experience designing, building and managing a large distributed deployment of Edge Compute in the order of 10's to 100s of thousands of virtual machines. While Walmart has done Edge computing for over 25 years, we are completely redefining the stack and how it will be done in the future. You will have to lead through the transformational change at scale and leverage advancements in Edge Computing. You will need to have the knowledge to transform the operational model from the traditional Ops Model, by leveraging current and future capabilities in AIOps to create platforms, tools, and an organization that can support rapid transformation at the Edge. In many, if not most cases, you will need to chart new paths and develop solutions that do not exist in the industry today, as most organizations do not operate at this scale and don't have similar challenges. If you are a quick learner, self-driven, excited to work on large challenges, and passionate about using software, and machine learning to solve difficult problems at scale, we would love to have you on our team. • You have a broad and deep working knowledge of Linux Operating System (CentOS, Ubuntu, SLES) and virtualization technologies (VMware, Nutanix).
• You can have a deep technical conversation with a network engineer, or server engineer, and drive architectural decisions, and at the same time you can plan roadmaps with a Product Manager to develop long term plans.
• You are attracted by challenges and not driven away from them.

• Building collaborative relationships with key partners by driving priorities aligned to value streams, influencing and prioritizing product roadmaps, and gaining buy-in from executive leadership

What you'll do…

• Become a solid leader of a highly effective DevOps team and help influence strategy to build, extend, and maintain Edge Compute Infrastructure that supports our Distribution Centers in US, and across the globe.
• Influence significant architectural decisions about our next generation of computing technologies that support massive computational needs for Artificial Intelligence and Hyper Converged Infrastructure.
• Oversee the development, testing and deployment of enhancements for Edge Compute Infrastructure Services. Solve business needs with technology by evaluating different technology options and vendor products.
• Ensure solutions are created with security best practices in mind.
• Engage with our suppliers and Open source communities to drive product features and roadmaps. Walmart is a Platinum Member of Linux Foundation Networking.
• Travel may be required, up to 10% travel a year

What you'll bring…

• 10+ years of planning, designing, and engineering enterprise class systems and services. Proven ability to lead change across large platforms / functional areas using innovative technology solutions
• Competency in strategic thinking and leadership with strong relationship management ability
• Hands-on experience building, administrating, troubleshooting Linux systems in a highly distributed environment. Demonstrate a deep knowledge of Linux OS internals.
• Hands-on experience working with virtualization technologies like VMware, Nutanix. Demonstrate a deep knowledge of virtualization.
• Hands-on experience with containerization and knowledge of Kubernetes. Knowledge of Kubernetes optimized for Edge like KubeEdge, or K3s is a plus.
• Demonstrate hands-on experience developing solutions with Infrastructure as a Service and Configuration management tools like (Ansible, OpenStack, Chef, Puppet, etc.)
• Strong Scripting Skills (Python, Ruby, Perl, Bash, etc.)
• Demonstrate Experience with the Software Development Lifecycle and associated tools for source code management like Git, and build systems like Jenkins.
• Strong Knowledge of IP Networking including Virtual Private Cloud, VPN, SDN, DNS, Load-balancing, and Firewalls
• Strong knowledge of storage technologies, and ability to design storage for performance and resiliency, including SAN, NAS, RAID, Cloud Storage Technologies for block and Object storage.
• Proven ability to lead change across large platforms / functional areas using innovative technology solutions
• Demonstrates customer focus - evaluates decisions through the eyes of the customer; builds strong customer relationships; creates processes with customer viewpoint; partners with customers to help shape their future initiatives
• Strong analytical and strong problem solving skills - communicates in a clear and succinct manner and effectively evaluates information/data to make decisions; anticipates obstacles and develops plans to resolve; creates actionable strategies and operational plans
• Change oriented - actively generates process improvements; champions and drives change initiatives; confronts difficult circumstances in creative ways, balances multiple and competing priorities and executes accordingly
