Job Description:


BASIC FUNCTION

Salve Regina University's McKillop Library invites applications for the position of University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian. As a "lone arranger," the successful candidate will lead the operation and development of the University's archives and special collections, focusing on three areas: outreach and instruction, preservation and access, and collection management and development. The University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian connects students, faculty and staff with the teaching, research, and learning potential of the university's archives and special collections through instruction, exhibits, and other methods of outreach, to support the continued preservation of institutional heritage and its teaching and Mercy mission. They are responsible for preserving the institution's history and heritage by accessioning, organizing, and describing institutional records in accordance with current archival standards. This aspect of the position's mission is supported with an endowed fund for student fellows and student workers, who are mentored and supervised by the University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Outreach and Instruction


  • Provide reference support and interpret archives and special collections for the Salve Regina community and other scholars.
  • Develop relationships with faculty to encourage the integration of the University's archives and special collections in support of teaching and student research.
  • Develop instructional materials and conduct instruction sessions in support of primary source research using the University's archives and special collections.
  • In support of documenting Salve Regina's historical record, engage in outreach initiatives among students, faculty, administrators, and alumni.

Preservation and Access


  • Ensure the accessibility of incoming and existing collections, using archival methods of appraisal, arrangement, description, and storage.
  • In collaboration with systems and technology librarian, manage and build collections in the university's institutional repositories.
  • In collaboration with systems and technology librarian, develop digital and physical exhibits highlighting distinctive collections and institutional history.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student workers who support digitization and description of collections, providing students with mentorship and developing experiential learning opportunities.

Collection Management and Development


  • Liaison with donors, university offices, and academic departments to appropriately develop the University's archives and special collections in accordance with its collection development policy
  • Maintain and develop digital collections on platforms such as JSTOR Forum and Digital Commons


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Collaborate with other archives and library professionals in the city, state, and national level as needed; Liaise with state/regional groups for the preservation of archival materials, such as Rhode Island Archives & Manuscripts Collections Online (RIAMCO)



ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:


The incumbent is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.




Requirements:


  • ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science, including coursework in archives management.
  • Demonstrated history of self-direction and project management from conception to completion
  • Effective instructional, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong "people skills" such as a positive, patient, friendly, and approachable demeanor.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in archives and higher education.
  • Demonstrated excellence working in a highly service-oriented environment.
  • Experience working with a variety of metadata standards, including record creation using Dublin Core and EAD
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace and repositories such as JSTOR Forum and/or Bepress Digital Commons is desirable.
