PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general supervision and following established procedures, selects proper imaging techniques, operates ultrasound-imaging equipment to acquire images and provide an initial interpretation of exam to the physician in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies.

1} Ensures that two points of patient identification is obtained, that patient is properly prepared, and obtains a relevant patient history. Reviews the patient's chart to obtain pertinent clinical history, test results and laboratory data as they apply to accurate interpretation of the ultrasound examination.

2} Explains exam to the patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs; maintaining ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.). Delivers patient care under scope of license/training

3} Utilizes Standard precaution techniques as well as safety techniques specific to the patient's status.

4} Performs Ultrasound studies and is knowledgeable about conditions related to this patient population and the various types of care being provided to them.

5} Knowledgeable in the operation of all equipment to be used during the workday. Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed

6} Maintains effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel.

7} Executes paperwork and reporting functions as necessary for each patient exam.

8} Prepares the equipment, room and supplies necessary for each patient and regular daily use. Stock and supply room and general department area as needed.

9} May oversee and instruct various personnel and technology students within the department.

10} Acknowledges and participates in research programs, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects carried on in the department

11} Remains flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.

12} Remains up to date on developments and trends in imaging techniques, procedures, and equipment. To participate in education programs and meet state and national requirements for continuing educational credits.

13} Transports and transfers patients using established procedures according to departmental guidelines.

14} Uses independent judgment and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing patient exams.

15} Performs all other duties as directed.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have graduated from an AMA accredited Ultrasound Program with a minimum of 12 months' full time clinical ultrasound experience.
  • Must meet the requirements and successfully complete the ARDMS certification (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) or equivalent.
  • Must become registered in all the institution's accredited specialties: first specialty or additional specialty must be completed within one year of start of employment. Second specialty within second year of employment. Additional specialties as required by the accreditation agency.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patient who may be under physical and/or emotional stress
  • Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, and procedures and cross sectional anatomy.
  • Work requires several weeks training to acquire necessary familiarity with imaging procedures, techniques and methods.
  • Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, with frequent interruptions.
  • Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting. (linen, supplies, patients, etc.)
  • A comprehensive understanding of the Radiology Information System and Hospital Information System for registering patients.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team.
  • Must be aware of hazards within the department, adhere to safety standards established by Brigham & Women's Hospital and other regulatory agencies (large magnetic field, ionizing radiation, universal precautions, etc.).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Normal teaching clinical hospital environment.
  • Exposure to high frequency sound waves.
  • Possibility of contact with infectious diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Standing and walking most of the day.
