GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Working under minor supervision from lab members, executes protocols involving a variety of routine and non-routine experiments at a professional level. Troubleshoots and implements modifications on existing techniques, as appropriate. Suggests alternate technical routes and options based upon research in the literature. Calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using proper techniques. May serve in a supervisor role in a small setting. This is a great opportunity for a research technician who has worked in a wet lab and is looking for experience in brain diseases, mouse modeling and therapeutic approaches.

Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To set up breeding to maintain mouse strains, and uses PCR for genotyping and makes basic records of mouse breeding. Handles mice, performs behavioral tests, administers treatments (IP, IC), harvests tissue and interprets test results.
  • To perform quality control measures of tissue (protein or RNA quality measures) in order maintain a high level of reproducibility.
  • Performs RNA tissue isolation using existing techniques and protocols.
  • Performs protein extraction, SDS-PAGE gel electrophoresis and uses ELISA kits.
  • Assists in the orientation and training of new staff in established laboratory techniques.
  • Coordinates daily schedule of experiments.
  • Responsible for data management: collects, records, tabulates and presents data. Creates graphs of experimental, performs statistical tests, and discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor.
  • Uses judgment during experimental execution and meticulously performs procedures described laboratory protocols, research journals or devised with immediate supervisor.
  • All other duties assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree and at least one-year experience in a wet-lab research setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication, comfortable talking on the phone.

  • High degree of computer literacy.
  • Sound analytical and organizational skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Structures logically and effectively tasks and set priorities.
  • Is able to identify potential problems and trouble-shoot solutions.
  • Demonstrates ability to analyze data statistically and to logically present it.
  • Shows strong interpersonal communication skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Normal laboratory environment.
  • May be exposed, under controlled conditions, to hazardous materials.
  • Mouse tissue will be used.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Responsible for training and orienting new staff. May serve as a team leader or supervisor in a small research setting.
