The Nimbus Team at the University of Chicago is an academic leader in cloud and edge computing research, development, and operations. We work closely with scientific communities to provide innovative solutions adapting cloud computing to the needs of science. Among others, we operate Chameleon (www.chameleoncloud.org), an experimental platform for Computer Science research, where new solutions in cloud computing, machine learning, software defined networking (SDN), and Internet of Things (IoT) are developed every day by an international research community. Job Summary

The Nimbus team at the University of Chicago is seeking a Technical Project Manager for a research platform supporting Computer Science innovation in emergent topics spanning cloud computing, machine learning, software defined networking (SDN), and Internet of Things (IoT). The Technical Project Manager will work with the project PI and a fun and experienced technical team on empowering scientists to work better, share better, and advance science faster through coordination, collaboration, and drive.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the development of innovative open-source services, tools, and platforms for research through execution of industry-standard project management across engineering and scientific teams, developing a deep understanding of research objectives, data, and software capabilities.
  • Identifies and raises risks with leaders, coordinating on planning for and documenting risks with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact and manages interactions between partners on Nimbus projects and external stakeholders including academia, civic organizations, community-based organizations, industry partners, and government.
  • Ensures the appropriate approvals are in place for compliance including, but not limited to IT security, data governance, contractual requirements, federal acquisition regulations, etc.
  • Coordinates reporting of project documentation and deliverables across different media including, but not limited to project plans, activities, risks, requirements, deliverables, and dependencies; includes participating in manuscript preparation, grant proposal development, reports, and other artifacts.
  • Implements a project management system informed by best practices to organize and delegate project tasks according to team capacity and expertise. Ensures task completion and develops key performance indicators to evaluate project progress and growth of the Chameleon platform.
  • Exhibits and continues learning applied project management and agile (or related methodologies and skills including, but not limited to, scrum master, waterfall, business analysis, kanban, XP) best practices with minimal supervision.
  • Interacts with and helps manage user community for team projects, ranging but not limited to vetting users and approving allocation requests, understanding emergent use cases or problem areas and synthesizing feedback to create momentum for platform change, reaching out to new users and improving user diversity in underrepresented communities via conferences, webinars, and presentations, as well as help organizing user events and creating training/educational materials.
  • Interfaces with NSF and potentially other funding agencies on work breakdown structure tracking, progress reporting, and general project management progress.
  • Maintains project web presence, social media, project archives, and project documentation/information.
  • Uses depth and breadth of knowledge in IT project management to build project plans, including budgets and human resource plans. Provides expertise on managing projects. Maintains project web presence, project archives and project documentation.
  • Ensures quality control of the project methodology and contributes to the further enhancement and application of the methodology.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Advanced degree (e.g. MSc, Ph.D, MBA).

Experience:
  • Two to three years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Experience working with technical developers, tech design and engineering teams.
  • Exposure to fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of software development.
  • Professional experience in academic institutions and/or industry or startup environments.
  • Experience working with open-source software.
  • Successful experience leading at least one sizable, complex project, preferably serving multiple and/or competing constituencies.

Preferred Competencies
  • Take a broad plan or proposal and break it into incremental tasks and oversee the completion of each task.
  • Accurately monitor project progress, to keep track of effort and funds expended and committed, and to anticipate at an early stage any need for changes in project direction, scope, objectives, funding, or timeline.
  • Knowledge and interest in science, cloud computing, infrastructure, and the latest technology.
  • Come into, and collaborate with, a team used to minimal supervision and oversight and ensure accountability for deliverables through partnership and influence.
  • Persuade subject matter experts to adapt new structures or systems in order to meet objectives.
  • Project management knowledge, including familiarity with agile methods and project management tools and platforms.
  • Manage one's time well and achieve objectives.
  • Learn new content areas and new skills quickly and well.
