Administrative Information Technology Services (AITS)

University of Illinois System - Urbana

The University System Office seeks a System Administrator to help ensure the operating reliability and efficiency of server hardware and software for the University's administrative computer system in multiple sites. This position is responsible for the 24x7 technical support of System Office services hosted on AITS servers. This is a position which requires technical expertise with Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux server administration as well as industry practices. Responsibilities include solving technical issues and following direction in the design and implementation of complex systems. This role requires understanding of and experience installing, configuring, and maintaining Oracle Solaris-based and Oracle Linux-based servers and the ability to involve risk assessment and user support. This role leverages expertise with the Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux operating systems and server administration to deploy servers, support day-to-day system operations, and prevent data loss and unauthorized access.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Manage and maintain servers:

  • - Develops standards for Oracle Solaris/Linux servers.

    - Ensures the interoperability of AITS supported products.

    - Fully designs, implements, supports, and upgrades AITS Oracle Solaris/Linux servers.

    - Requires the knowledge to configure and understand the tools that monitor the "health" of all servers.

    - Provides backup and disaster recovery.

    - Maintains and updates server inventory.

    - Participate in the on-call rotation for server administrators which rotates through each person in the group and each person is on-call 24/7 for one week each rotation.

    - The position requires a high level of service, and the individual must be reachable and able to respond to issues/ problems within published service response times (either from the employee's office location or remotely).

  • Performs system maintenance:

  • - Apply operating system updates and configuration changes along with updating utility software products on the systems.

    - Coordinate the software maintenance with campus units and vendors.

    - Coordinate tasks with other groups and schedules changes through change control.

  • Maintain system security:

  • - Work on server security issues found with internal AITS network scanning tools

    - Stay current with technological developments and recommends ways to take advantage of new technology to improve security.

  • Manages server hardware in accordance with industry best practices:

  • - Repairs/replaces hardware components to ensure high availability? troubleshoots and resolves server problems.

    - Configures servers and connects them to the physical networks.

    - Works with the team to provide the facilities management of all server components.

  • Keeps informed of new technology in the field and participates in the preparation of long-range comprehensive support plans.
  • Provides expertise, advice, and training to technical staff in the organization.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


  • Education and Experience

    Required:

    Any combination totaling two (2) years from the following categories: progressively more responsible work experience in an Information Technology (IT) related profession. College course work which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:60 semester hours or Associate's Degree equals one (1) year, 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree equals two (2) years. Experience with high-end server computing, mostly with Solaris and/or Linux servers. Experience with design, installation, documentation, and administration of Solaris and/or Linux servers. Experience with either Solaris 11 servers with ZFS, or Linux servers with BTRFS or LVM.

    Preferred:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Prefer 3-5 years IT work experience in complex systems design, programming, and systems software and support.
  • Prefer experience with Oracle Solaris Automated Install (AI) for deploying new servers.
  • Prefer experience with creating and administering Solaris 11 boot environments. Would prefer that the server experience involved WANs, LANs, SANs, VLAN tagging, server-based software components and related optimization, customization, and diagnostic tools.


  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Analytical and technical skills to support troubleshooting, planning, and administration of servers.
  • Working knowledge of University structure and procedures.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communications, including the ability to effectively communicate technical information to technical or non-technical staff.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively.

    This is a full-time Civil Service IT Technical Associate position appointed on a 12 month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after November 4, 2021. Salary is commensurate with experience.
