Under the direction of the medical and nursing staff, the Surgical Technologist Π (ST) performs duties related to the intra-operative process in accordance with established policies and procedures; anticipate the needs of the patient, surgeon and department; prepares and maintains sterile supplies, instrument, and equipment; adheres to strict aseptic technique and standard precautions; practices ethical and conscientious behavior in regard to aseptic technique.

Up to $7,500 Sign on Bonus

Quick, efficient hand-eye-coordination and manual dexterity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting in the preparation of the surgical suite; creating and maintaining a sterile field; facilitating surgical case progress by exhibiting quick, efficient manual dexterity in passing surgical instruments and supplies to the operative field. The ST must exhibit ability to perform multiple tasks while simultaneously being detail oriented. Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity is necessary to safely and correctly operate equipment, manipulate tubes, catheters and instruments. The primary method of communication is through the spoken word. However, the ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise manipulate information in a visual or auditory fashion is essential. The ability to exercise independent judgment and to foster interdisciplinary team collaboration in order to achieve optimal customer satisfaction is necessary.

Technical Duties: Proficient in math applications and use of spreadsheet programs; ability to operate word processing equipment; advanced written communication skills including grammar, spelling, and punctuation; thorough understanding of all regulations regarding personnel practices.

Motor Skills: Ability to input data to computer.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact with others in a professional, courteous, tactful manner; ability to act as a consultant to management.

Mental Abilities: Organize and prioritize; analyze situations and develop alternatives; analyze data and develop valid conclusions, develop clear, concise policies, procedures and correspondence; provide clear direction to others; manage duties in an environment of changing priorities and frequent deadlines.

Sensory Requirements: Ability to communicate with others via telephone; ability to read written documents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

(Describe significant physical exertion as it relates to specific functions of the position. May include walking, standing, lifting, pushing, pulling, etc.)

This position requires considerable amount of physical work not to exceed 50 pounds. This work may involve but is not limited to lifting, carrying, pushing, or positioning of objects, equipment or patients. Any work load exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance. The individual must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch or bend in order to retrieve dropped items, read gauges and meters, or otherwise retrieve information from, at, or above floor level. The individual must be able to maneuver quickly through hospital corridors, stairways, and rooms in response to patient emergencies and case requirements. In the event of building evacuation, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety. Interpretation of the environment requires visual and auditory skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Environment:

The Surgical Technologist spends 100% of work hours in an air-conditioned environment. The potential exist for daily exposure to infectious blood, body fluids, tissues, and other biohazardous materials such as cleansing agents, sterilizing agents, anesthetics, fixatives and bone cement.

Occupational Safety and/or Health Risks:

(Identify equipment/precaution required to protect the employee from occupational hazards and/or health risks).

Personal protective equipment including disposable gloves, gowns, masks, face shield, protective eyewear, one-way valve masks, shoe covers and aprons are available in the department. Negative air flow is present in the OR's; appropriate protective goggles are available for laser use. A scavenger system for anesthetic waste removal is in place and bi-annual checks are performed. Protective lead is available when x-rays are taken intraoperatively. Appropriate receptacles are available for disposal of sharp objects and other biohazardous waste.

Case Preparation:

Selects appropriate surgeon preference card(s) for assigned cases.

If none available, prepares one at completion of case.

Verifies case cart completion and/or initiates timely collection of appropriate

supplies/ instruments as directed by nursing personnel.

Assures room cleanliness and assists with Preparation of assigned operating

room in a timely and efficient manner.

Adheres to established sterilization policies and procedures as evidenced

by ability to identify implement appropriate sterilization of equipment

and/or supplies.

Inspects all items for integrity and sterility prior to use.

Opens and dispenses sterile instruments and supplies in accordance with

established Aseptic Technique policy and procedure.

Prepares for and performs surgical hand scrub according established

policy and procedure.

Dons sterile gown gloves according to established policy and procedure.

Practices and ensures cost effective measures are maintenance while preparing

for surgical procedure.

Implementation:

Demonstrates ability to implement principles of aseptic technique in a variety

of circumstances and in accordance with established Aseptic Technique

policy and procedure.

Prepares sterile areas in an organized, timely and efficient manner.

Maintains appropriate, professional interpersonal relationships as

observed by supervisory personnel.

Performs initial and all subsequent sponge, needle/sharps, and instrument

counts according to established policy and procedure.

Anticipates needs of surgeon / assistants as evidenced by advance

knowledge and preparation of pertinent instrumentation and/or supplies.

Exhibits quick, efficient, and purposeful manual in the preparation and

passing of sterile instruments and/or supplies.

Attentive to case progression and interprets hand signals as evidenced by

anticipating surgical team needs.

Cares for and identifies all surgical specimens according to established

policy and procedure.

Demonstrates ability to perform scrub responsibilities in all appropriate

surgical specialties.

Accurately identifies and labels all medications used on the sterile field

as evidenced by Adherence to established policy and procedure.

At the completion of the surgical procedure, Demonstrate knowledge

of accountability for and decontamination of soiled instruments as

evidence by adherence to established protocol.

Assists, as necessary, with activities related to the cleaning of operating rooms

and ancillary areas according to established Sanitation Policy and Procedure.

Participates in hospital risk management program by reporting all unusual

occurrences according to policy.

14. Demonstrates safe and correct restraint procedures in accordance with hospital policy.

15. Attends departmental and / or unit-based meetings or acknowledges review of

note/ minutes on a weekly basis.

16 Adheres to established policy/procedure on Sanitation, Infection Control and

Standard Precautions in the performance of assigned responsibilities.

17 Initiates and/or assists with daily restocking and maintenance of assigned

operating rooms in a timely and efficient manner.

18 Receptive to constructive criticism and responds in a positive manner as

observed by supervisory personnel.

19. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

20. Demonstrates knowledge of & observes decontamination principles as evidenced

by adherence to established protocol.

21. Meets expectation of department calls & overtime responsibilities.

Leadership:

Recognizes & is an advocate of team concept.

Assist in providing unit based education and in-services of chosen surgical

specialties.

Utilizes supplies & equipment judiciously.

Acts as preceptors for surgical technologists & other ancillary personnel as assigned

Serves as active member of the department or ancillary personnel and assigned

hospital committee

Proficient in all services.
