The Department of Health Information Management (HIM) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Supervisor Inpatient Coding to work in Miami, FL. Under the general direction of the Inpatient Coding Manager, the primary focus of the Inpatient Coding Supervisor will be to assist with the oversight of the day-to-day operations of the IP Coding Team. This candidate must maintain a robust knowledge of the inpatient coding conventions and rules established by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the ICD-10-CM/PCS Official Coding Guidelines for correct assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes to provide coding education and training to the team, and other areas of collaboration.

  • Assists in the recruitment and training of newly hired coding staff.
  • Collaborates with Patient Billing and Revenue Cycle departments to ensure timely discharge of unbilled accounts and assist in resolving claim edits and payor denials.
  • Maintains current knowledge of inpatient medical coding and documentation guidelines and regulations and educates staff on any variations.
  • Provides ongoing education to the coding team.
  • Reports any coding issues to the coding manager and recommends corrective action plans.
  • Ensure the coding staff maintains professional credential(s).
  • Manages vendor relationships and assists with onboarding contracted staff.
  • Serves as point of contact to assist team members with technology troubleshooting and/or reporting any IT issues with hardware or applications to expedite a resolution.
  • Assists the coding manager with staff timekeeping and paid time off requests.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with university policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on university policy and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (preferred)
  • 5+ years of inpatient acute care hospital coding.
  • Minimum 3-5 years in a coding supervisor role
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Skill in prioritizing and completing assignments with attention to detail and with competing deadlines.
  • Understanding and adherence to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Commitment to the University of Miami Health System policies and procedures.
  • Must be/stay up to date with continuing education requirements to maintain credentials.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Strong background in use of encoder, computer assisted coding, and electronic medical record (EMR) software applications.
  • Efficient communication skills: interpersonal, verbal and written.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Capable of working in a 100% remote environment with little supervision, while also remaining focused on assignment tasks.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
  • Distribute high dollar accounts to coding team and vendor coders when necessary and especially at end of month.
  • Assist IP coding manager with working down Discharge Not Billed (DNB) to meet monthly and yearly goals.
  • Work denials, claim edits, hospital billing reviews, and email requested chart reviews.
  • Manage payroll, timekeeping edits, UHealth coder paid time off requests, and approve timecards each week.
  • Oversee staffing and scheduling with both UHealth and vendor coders.
  • Assist with Prebill-Coding Only, Quality, and Medicare Mortality reviews.
  • Conduct training and onboarding of new Inpatient coder new hires.
  • Manage all vendor relations.
  • Arrange and hold bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with each UHealth IP Coder and report any issues or needs to the IP Coding Manager.
  • Assist IT with testing for EMR and Encoder updates or changes to applications.
