Job Summary

Indiana University East is accepting applications for a Student Life Specialist in the office of Campus Life. The Student Life Specialist will work collaboratively with the Director of Campus Life. The Student Life Specialist coordinates the delivery of a comprehensive program of student activities, student clubs, student organizations, and student government and supports a broad range of student programming activities, all aimed at enhancing student engagement and retention.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops and implements plans for major student activities such as: Back with the Pack, Welcome Back, Homecoming, as well as concerts, comedians and other major Campus Life events.
  • Coordinates activities of student clubs and organizations, Student Government Association, Student Activities Advisory Team, directly advising and mentoring selected clubs and serving as a resource for student leaders and club officers.
  • Assists with coordinating the preparation and dissemination of flyers, posters, social media postings, and other communication materials to promote student activities and maximize student involvement.
  • Collaborates with other campus offices and units (Title IX, Career Services, Financial Aid/Literacy, Academic schools, The Den, etc.) to develop a comprehensive student life calendar and to engage an increasing number of students.
  • Works with campus spirit groups, cheer, dance, pep band, and mascot, on planning and executing programs.
  • Regularly conducts outcomes assessment on all programming, while evaluating student needs and satisfaction.
  • Provides support to other campus events as needed, including New Student Orientations, Commencement, and Title IX events.
  • Performs other duties incidental to those described herein and as assigned and co-supervises (with Director of Campus Life) student workers and work-study students.
General Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives geared at improving student engagement and involvement outcomes at the program, department/division, or campus level.
  • Interfaces directly with students, attending student life events and programs and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student life initiatives and objectives.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as student organization leaders, on shared student life goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student life initiatives.
  • Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student life initiatives against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports and presents to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • Provides guidance to student organizations regarding operations, budget, leadership, activities, recruitment, registration, policies, and compliance. Promotes leadership and student development through advising of individual student leaders and volunteers. Contributes to formation, interpretation, and implementation of student organization policies.
  • Plans and coordinates communications for student life initiatives to ensure student participation and inclusion.
  • May provide guidance to other Student Life Specialists; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in public affairs, public health, counseling, social work, education, business, or a related field.
Preferred
  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs or a related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in student services, higher education, or a related field.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
