Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

As a dedicated member of the Advanced Technology organization, the Staff Technology Lead will:

  • Lead Technology Development projects and multi-disciplinary teams (both internal and external) to identify, quantify & drive down risks and demonstrate bench, clinical and commercial feasibility for next generation technologies and system architectures.
  • Conduct and/or Lead technical scouting for innovation as it pertains to Phase 0 technology portfolio/roadmap 3-7 years out or beyond.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Commercial teams to understand business needs as they relate to new technologies.
  • Support the Articulation of long-term product vision and Develop actionable strategies for early technology development as it pertains to the business and business drivers.
  • Break-down complex business needs and translate them into actionable system level projects to address those needs.
  • Develop and foster internal relationships with functional teams.
  • Knowledgeable in key business drivers/metrics to inform & facilitate next generation product design (e.g. scalability, cost-modeling, etc).
  • Lead the execution of Feasibility Studies with Preclinical, Clinical and UX teams.
  • Generate technology investment proposals linking needs and technologies and obtain funding & project approval from Advanced Technology, R&D, and Marketing leadership teams.
  • Develop IP to support efforts derived from technology development projects.
  • Initiate &Foster relationships with key vendors and development partners.
  • Drive project planning, track timelines, milestones, objectives, and priorities for technology projects and provide regular updates to leadership
  • Provide SME support through development as technologies are transferred beyond Phase 0.
  • • Design components for functional reliability and high volume manufacturing, including processes such as, plastic injection molding, metal stamping and forming, machining, and others as required.
  • • Conduct theoretical analysis and performance simulations of product designs.
  • • Conduct tolerance analysis and produce component and assembly level specifications.
  • • Capture design solutions using CAD tools.
  • • Utilize root cause investigation methodologies to de-bug and solve functional performance challenges.
  • • Develop test plans, protocols and reports to document concept and feasibility activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • Previous direct involvement in Medical Device product and/or technology development
  • Direct exposure and expertise with high volume manufacturing Proficient in principles of GD&T, DFM, DFA, & DMAIC
  • Demonstrated ability to run self-directed projects, maintain timelines, transfer technology and execute projects in an early-stage technical environment (Formal Project Management training or PMP a Plus)
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, analyze, and interpret data to generate insights and conclusions
  • Demonstrated Ability to deal with ambiguity/uncertainty and a willingness to try new/challenging things
  • Proficient in the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools (SolidWorks preferred) to communicate product ideas and technical solutions
  • Proficient in the use of engineering analysis (ex. MatchCAD, Matlab, FEA) and statistical analysis tools (ex. Minitab, JMP) to design and evaluate product design, performance and reliability
  • Proven ability to work hands-on and independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in the design and development of small electromechanical systems and processes for high volume (100M+/year) production.
  • Previous experience working in a start-up or early-stage environment
  • Proficient in the use of statistical analytical methods including reliability allocation & prediction
  • Specific SME knowledge in one or more of the following technology spaces: wearables, needles/micro-needles, patch/adhesives, batteries, sealing technologies, flexible circuits, electronics packages, sensor technologies.

Functional Description

Provides technical expertise to the design and development of new invasive and noninvasive medical device product(s). Investigates/evaluates existing technology and advises research and development, regulatory affairs, and reliability engineering to ensure appropriate process development under the best possible conditions. Designs and implements new methodologies, materials, machines, processes, or products. Develops new concepts from initial design to market release. Conducts feasibility studies of the design to determine ability to function as intended. Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development. Coordinates activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure the delivery of supplies or services needed to meet scheduled timelines.

Functional/Business Knowledge

  • Possesses advanced knowledge of technical principles and theories. Recommends solutions in support of functional objectives tied to overall company objectives and strategies.

Scope

  • Demonstrates significant technical expertise, collaboration with others and independent thought. Anticipates potential complex problems requiring an in-depth evaluation. Demonstrates strategic thinking and commercial/industry understanding in functional projects.

Judgement

  • Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Determines methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate activities of other colleagues.

Experience and Education

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 8-12 years related experience or Masters degree and 5-7 years equivalent industry experience or a PhD and 2-4 years of experience.
