Oversee distribution activities and milk hauling operations for DFA Northeast Logistics (NEL), including development of fleet specifications, procurement and disposal processes, supervisor and driver training and compliance (DFA and Department of Transportation), and safety compliance. Ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery through staff and in coordination with other departments to exceed customer expectations within budgetary constraints. Manage location managers and/or supervisors of the five NEL depots - St. Albans, Enosburg, Irasburg and Shoreham, VT and Concord, NH. Work with DFA Northeast Logistics (NEL) management group to identify, develop, and implement training and development programs and processes in the areas of quality, technical competency (SOP), and leadership. Develop, source, and facilitate training topics for all business operations of DFA NEL to include transportation and maintenance. Oversee special project audits. Track and assign ELD's, tablets, cameras, and transponder box (gateways).

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure distribution activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner in compliance with policies and procedures that ensure safe operations
  • In conjunction with the Safety Manager, investigate and report all accidents and injuries appropriately to maintain a safe work environment and comply with state and federal laws. Lead promotion and communication of DFA's safety program
  • Communicate with production facilities, corporate staff, and others regarding potential problems, issues, coordination, and resolution. Present findings to organizational leadership
  • Oversee the management of scheduling, work assignments, and optimization of outgoing semi-trailers. Ensure staff and deliveries are utilized in most efficient and cost-effective manner and minimize time and errors adapt to necessary changes based on farm variances and seasonal production
  • Interview, select, supervise, develop, and, if necessary, counsel personnel according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Oversee performance management of assigned staff. Ensure all staff documentation is accurate, maintained, and reported as needed
  • In conjunction with Human Resources, review and coordinate drivers' state licenses, permits, endorsements, and DOT compliance. Ensure requirements for DOT mandated drug and alcohol testing are met
  • Determine optimal truck and trailer equipment requirements based on current and future milk pickup and delivery transportation needs
  • Coordinate and schedule deliveries to meet and exceed customer expectations while optimizing loads and minimizing work hours. Communicate with necessary parties regularly to provide clear direction and discuss any potential issues
  • Negotiate and coordinate office facility lease and operations. Coordinate vehicle parking and truck, trailer, and driver logistics at location
  • Solicit non-member milk hauling business when it is profitable and operationally prudent
  • Coordinate activities of contracted services and actively review for best cost benefit available. Support DFA initiatives with contract haulers
  • Effectively manage and analyze the distribution budget and proactively seek ways to reduce costs through continuous improvement of distribution operations
  • Compile and analyze distribution and fleet information to generate appropriate reports for DFA, insurance providers, and government entities. Coordinate development of fleet equipment specifications and oversee procurement process. Partner with HR, Safety, and the DOT compliance group to establish training calendars to meet DFA and regulatory compliance training needs
  • Develop training plans and curriculums to meet the identified needs and objectives of DFA NEL
  • Coordinate with DFA NEL management staff, vendors, and consultants to research and develop training materials needed to meet DFA NEL training needs. Revise training materials as needed to reflect changes in process, procedures, laws, or strategies. Facilitate training and organization development functions for all levels in DFA NEL
  • Create and maintain instructional materials to include quick reference materials, training, and job aids for DFA NEL groups
  • Develop and implement new driver training process for experienced and inexperienced drivers; monitor effectiveness and compliance with established training goals
  • Continually monitor and enhance the new hire orientation process to ensure efficient and thorough onboarding processes and procedures to extend into the first weeks on the job including new hire Dairy U training
  • Develop and monitor standard operating procedures
  • Audit payroll and other special project audits
  • Monitor, track, and assign ELD tablets and transponder box (gateways)
  • Monitor, track, and assign LYTX cameras to each truck while working with DOT manager and location supervisors
  • Work with accounting on billing to contractors, load outs and any other billing for third-party services
  • Track, reconcile, and report on periodic metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) compared to established targets for communication to various audiences
  • Dedicate effort to safety as we expect every employee to leave work in the same condition as they arrive
  • Follow all DFA good manufacturing practices (GMP) and work in a manner consistent with all corporate regulatory, food safety, quality, and sanitation requirements; report any nonconformity
  • Exhibit the values and ethics of Dairy Farmers of America through honesty, discretion, and sound judgment
  • Work schedule includes on call and weekend shifts

Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience
  • Undergraduate degree in transportation, supply chain management, or logistics with emphasis on finance, business administration, or related curriculum (requisite work experience may be substituted for the required education)
  • 6 years of transportation/distribution or related work experience including supervisory or management experience
  • 2+ years of management experience preferred
  • Familiarity with agriculture is helpful
  • Dispatching experience preferred
  • Certification and/or License - May be required to obtain and maintain other certifications and/or licenses for continued employment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of company computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and personnel management
  • Knowledge of transportation logistics within and across states
  • Knowledge of best practices in distribution
  • Skill in commercial dispatching and route planning
