Primary Role Reporting to the Senior Director of Enterprise Analytics in the Analytics Center of Excellence (ACE) in Duke Health Technology Solutions (DHTS), this senior level manager has the responsibility for the design and delivery of innovative data engineering solutions across the Duke Enterprise. This position leads a dedicated team of data engineers, data modelers, and application developers who are focused on delivering new organizational capabilities by modernizing current data integration processes and organizational access to data. As a member of the DHTS-ACE leadership team, this role will contribute to strategic decision making as pertains to supporting the data and analytical needs of both the Duke University School of Medicine as well as the Duke University Health System. Partnering with the Director of Data Engineering and Operations, the incumbent will be charged with architecting appropriate solutions to deliver on that strategy with innovative and modern data processing techniques. Common Essential Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Participate in key technical and design discussions as a hands-on manager to help drive innovative solutions
  • Build cross-functional relationships with data scientists, software engineers, and database developers to understand data needs and deliver on those needs.
  • Manage development of data resources and support new product launches
  • Maintain current technical knowledge and expertise in the functional areas under the purview of this position, towards securing the ongoing professional regard of data scientists distributed throughout the organization
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement cutting edge data pipelines and frameworks required to provide requested capabilities to integrate internal and external data sources and APIs.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and continuous delivery of data pipelines using modern toolsets supporting data processing initiatives across batch and streaming datasets.
  • Provide architectural support by building proofs of concept and prototypes, iteratively as appropriate, recognizing the importance of failing fast in order to speed delivery of solutions into the hands of end users.
  • Work closely with project management to ensure staff resources are available to meet project deliverables
  • Deliver high quality services through commitment to continuous improvement
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends
  • Anticipate and plan for technology challenges and influences in the environment
  • Develop and monitor key program metrics
  • Motivate staff to work toward the project timeline while maintaining high standards of quality
  • Celebrate project successes and hold staff accountable for their work

Education


Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.

Required Experience

  • 3+ years of management experience in an application development environment.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with data engineering, having experience with:
  • SQL or similar languages and development experience in at least one object-oriented language (Python, Perl, Java, Ruby, etc.)
  • Data Pipelines, ETL, data warehousing, workflow systems, etc.
  • SQL and NoSQL databases such as Oracle, MSSQL, MongoDB, and/or PostgreSQL
  • Experience scaling and managing 5+ person teams
  • Communication and leadership skills, with the ability to initiate and drive projects proactively
  • Experience leading teams using Agile development principles

  • Preferred

    • Development experience with big data platforms and data lakes
    • Knowledge of visualization and data science tools
    • Data architecture experience
