What You Will Contribute:

The Sr. Engineer - Firmware/Electronic role is an opportunity to work with Badger Meter's newest acquisition and product area, Analytical Technologies (ATI) Inc. This role will work with our newly formed Water Quality division and assist in leading Badger Meter through continued growth and alignment amongst our product families. This particular position is primarily focused on developing state-of-the-art measurement products, in addition to supporting existing products within the company, using a combination of electrical/mechanical/software/chemical engineering design skills. The Sr. Engineer role has the opportunity lead projects, manage resources within the development team, and is looked to by other departments for support of technical products. This is an individual contributor role that offers lots of autonomy, creativity and the opportunity to work side by side with the leader for Engineering in Water Quality.

This role will be working out of our office in Downtown Milwaukee (301 N. Broadway), and may require minimal travel to the ATI location in Collegeville, PA.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Project management: This role will work with the entire design process, for multiple complex projects, from initial Marketing R&D through to long term post-release Sales/Production support. This role will need to track project schedule to ensure adherence to timelines, and adherence to budget plan to ensure final product releases at/under desired target cost. This role will also document all project details including schedules, budgets, and production planning.
  • Provide technical leadership: This role will provide direction, guidance and product expertise to project team members, Pennsylvania main engineering group, and all other departments as needed, including Sales, Service, and Production.
  • Presentation skills: Give effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent work group on review panels and cross-organizational teams. Technically manage and support a multi-product group technology area within the organization.
  • Embedded Firmware: Write, debug, and test embedded firmware in C/C++ using various cross-development tools from various vendors for 8/16/32 bit microcontrollers using software such as Codewarrior, IAR, Cosmic. Maintain concise descriptions and coding flow details in all embedded software files.
  • Design/layout/test new analog and digital circuit pcbs as part of product development process, using EDA design tools such as PCAD, Altium.
  • Work with Pennsylvania Engineering Group to create new mechanical/chemical components as required. Mechanical design tool proficiency is not required.
  • Evaluate New Measurement Technologies: As directed, evaluate new measurement technologies for potential new products, and research test new measurements concepts. Write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for external consumption.
  • Partner with the Sales/Marketing groups to determine the appropriate features and cost tradeoffs of proposed new systems, and create engineering specifications for new products.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors of Science Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or CS/Software/Firmware Engineering. Working design knowledge of both embedded firmware and electronics is required.
  • 7+ years of product design experience, including R&D work, production release/fixturing, manufacturing support, and cost reduction activity.
  • Candidate must have a strong demonstrated experience with the tools used in the development of embedded systems, including compilers/assemblers, RTOS software, debuggers, etc. Should have working understanding of software development and implementation processes such as revision control, configuration management, and structured verification.
  • Candidate must be able to write firmware using the C Programming Language and understand common relationships between hardware details and operating firmware/software .A working understanding of assembly language is also required.
  • Candidate must be able to design analog and digital circuits, and have working familiarity with circuit EDA tools such as PCAD, Protel, Altium, etc.
  • Good understanding of basic electronics and analog and digital systems tradeoffs, signal integrity, noise analysis. Ability to do statistical analysis with collected data, and apply various spreadsheet methods to properly analyzer and present data. Prior knowledge of electrochemical detection circuits a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with CE EMC requirements, and CSA-UL for hazardous and non-hazardous locations - as they apply to industrial instrumentation.
  • Experience working with customers directly on specialized problems desired.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Organizational leadership skills and ability to coordinate projects.
