Purpose
This position is responsible for the planning, routing, tracking, bidding, procuring, inspecting, and documenting the completion of jobs being outsourced from machine shop, equipment rebuild, or weld fabrication. This position is also responsible for the analysis and justification of machining/rebuild work in addition to creating continuous improvement opportunities within shops services and the operating plants. The position is responsible for advising supervisors, analysts, and management within the operating plants of the most cost-effective methods of repair when considering end of life, life-cycle cost, internal repairs, and external repairs. The employee in this position will be the recognized expert regarding machined items and/or rebuilt mechanical components from the operating plants and will use the expertise to develop best practice methods and drive continuous improvement to minimize life cycle cost. Required to provide off shifts and off hours suppport as per business needs. Up to 10% travel on an as needed basis, generally local travel.

Responsibilities

  • Safety & Environmental - Maintain a safe and environmentally correct workplace by enforcing the company and plant safety and environmental rules and policies, ensuring that associates are always wearing the required personal protective equipment, providing prompt and clear communications, providing training as needed and required, performing regular workplace audits, and involving all employees. Will be the first responder to all environmental incidents in shop services and contacting the required personnel in a timely manner while filling out the appropriate reports. Will also perform investigations for safety incidents and near-miss incidents.
  • Execution - Timely completion of all work being routed through the shops to outside vendors. Thousands of jobs worth several million dollars flow through the shops each year. This requires careful analysis of all jobs to ensure the optimum balance of work done internally and externally. The efficiency and readiness of the shops is dependent on timely routing and communication of work orders. The incoming work is continuous and demanding of time and technical skills. Technical skills must include machining, welding, metallurgy, drafting, Maximo, print reading, and an understanding of mechanical assemblies. Inspection of fabrications, machined parts, and rebuilt spare parts either at FMCC, GMCC, or at the supplier prior to shipment. Serve as a trainer and procedure developer to maintenance repair operation employees to conduct minor spares maintenance (e.g. rotating equipment on preset intervals, re-sealing spares, minor lubrication).
  • Procurement - Working closely with the purchasing group. Regular communication with purchasing agents. Must provide technical information and support to all agents, shops staff, and outside vendors which includes translating, interpreting, and converting engineering drawings from metric to standard to maintain scopes of work. When necessary, obtains multiple quotes for outside vendor work and track the cost, performance, and on-time delivery of vendors. Supports the onboarding of qualified vendors. Manages outside vendor workload. Conducts audits to maintain a knowing knowledge of risks and opportunities of external support.
  • Communications - Develop a good relationship with maintenance supervision, maintenance planners, and shops teams to provide timely and clear communications regarding equipment issues. Communication may relate to breakdowns, planned downturn work, rush jobs, regularly planned work, or replacement spares managed with maintenance repair operation inventory algorithms. Communication within shop services is also critical as all shops are intertwined, communication for jobs spanning multiple shops is critical to achieving turn-around time and on-time delivery to the plants. Communication is also key with outside vendors and the successful execution of work is dependent on feedback for on time delivery and quality of workmanship. Visiting external shops that are rebuilding spares for us reviewing and supporting progress on jobs (e.g. specifications, assisting with the gathering/interpretation of prints, support a design for reliability, scope of work). Either acting by communicating with TimkenSteel supervision status or shutting down jobs if incorrect. Bringing results of the visits back to supervision to make business decisions.
  • Continuous Improvement and Cost - As the value of the work is very high, so too, is the opportunity for continuous improvement and cost reduction. Expectation for continuous improvement and cost savings for this position are always the highest of any position in shop services. In depth analysis of improvements in material selection, the machining process, the fabrication process, and drawing corrections are expected. Additionally, this position would be responsible for identifying, qualifying, and auditing new and existing vendors. Following up on long lead time jobs, reporting out on progress of repairs, and issuing corrective action responses when defects are received.

Technical Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage technical priorities and resources
  • Broad knowledge and experience of fabrication, machine equipment, and equipment rebuilding
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of individuals (management and technical) within and outside the business
  • Strong print reading skills

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 9 years of experience in welding, machining, mechanical maintenance, industrial maintenance, or related

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in mechanical technology or related with 6 years of experience in welding, machining, mechanical maintenance, industrial maintenanc e, or related
  • Bachelor's Degree in industrial or mechanical engineering or related with 4 years of experience in welding, machining, mechanical maintenance, industrial maintenance, or related
