Purpose

The Senior Power Systems Engineer is a critical role within the Offshore Renewables Business, focussing on the delivery of large-scale offshore wind projects in the US/Europe.

Belonging to the Grid Team and reporting to the Lead Electrical Design Manager, the Power System Eng. will be responsible for supporting in defining and implementing robust and cost effective electrical engineering strategies and plans, tendering, negotiating and managing multi-million dollars offshore supply, installation and maintenance contracts, planning and implementing delivery sites and logistics, leading delivery phase including management of multiple offshore contractors and associated interfaces, defining company and business engineering standards and technical acceptance criteria, and ensuring quality, best practices and excellent H&SE performance are applied. The candidate will be managing electrical engineering activities and decisions from a senior engineering perspective across the offshore project portfolio.

The individual will be working as part of a global business with activities in many countries across US, Europe and the rest of the world. The position may require some travel to various locations in the US and overseas and the individual should be capable of managing teams working at different project locations.

Responsibilities

• Support the Electrical Design Manager to develop the electrical design pf Project's assets.
• Coordinate the managing of the Electrical Studies for the project from the interconnection filing to commercial operation date.
• Management of the consultants or suppliers in undertaking electrical system studies and other technical electrical input to the project including provision of required input data from TSOs and other packages.
• Ensure the required number and iterations of the electrical system studies are optimised to reduce VOs using engineering judgement and carried out in order to suitably validate the electrical design basis and provide relevant inputs to all Packages tendering main electrical equipment.
• Support the review and approval of key electrical system studies and design changes. Ensure management of design variations to the system design basis (e.g., through design review workshops etc.);
• Support the definition of main design criteria and functional design requirements of all main HV and MV systems including main electrical equipment, IAC and Export Cable, managing the work of a team of specialists in the aforementioned areas.
• Ensure that the electrical system design process is recorded and justified, in collaboration with the Project and respective Engineering Manager, in order to provide design justification.
• Management of the consultants or suppliers for electrical system studies and other technical matters including coordinating input data from ISO/TSP and other packages.
• Ensure Grid Code compliance of the wind farm and wider electrical system from the project design to commissioning. Ensure the required electrical system studies are carried out to demonstrate compliance. Coordinate the review and approval of all electrical designs, inputs and studies.
• Support the management of the interface with the grid operator (System Operator and/or Transmission Owner):
o Support technical meetings / workshops as required.
o Submit (modification) applications as required to align the connection agreement with project programme, capacity and connection design.
o Control submission of relevant project data to the Grid Operator as required by relevant agreements.

• Support all technical discussions regarding the grid interface point.
• Manage and control all electrical design information to and from all packages on the project.
• To ensure the correct implementation of standard and non-standard requirements documentation in all electrical system tender packages.
• To review the suitability of designs and ratings proposed by suppliers of the Export Cable, OSS MEQ, IAC and WTG HV Electrical equipment in accordance with electrical studies.
• Identify and manage risks and interfaces associated with the electrical design.
• Ensure corporate HSE policies are adhered to in all matters and industry best practice.
• Ensure compliance with IBERDROLA/ SPR design procedures and guidelines or validate and document variations.
• To utilise existing of corporate Specifications/Standards and contribute to future revisions
• Report to the Project Services Electrical Engineering Team status, risks, and lessons learned.

• Interact with different OEMs in different modelling workstream
• Able to support a QP filing

Skills and Requirements

Education, Skills, Knowledge & Experience

• Educated to BS / BE degree level or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline with a higher-level degree (e.g., MEng) desirable
• IT literate with the ability to operate MS Office systems and other IT based project management software.
• Preferred substantial experience in offshore wind (or oil and gas / utility / power sector) of at least 10 years.

• Knowledge and experience in electrical systems related to large scale offshore wind farms (preferred) and/or substations.
• Extensive experience covering:
o Plant interconnection and grid compliance (system studies and post construction tests)
o High voltage equipment principles (Transformers, STATCOMS, Reactors, GIS, Harmonic Filters)
o Power Systems Studies (load flow, transients, dynamic stability, grounding, power quality)
• Preferred experience will also include:
o Wind farm controls and protection
o Wind turbine electrical systems
• Strong Background in power systems studies (steady state as well as transient, dynamic stability, power quality)
• Able to perform studies in PSS/e and PSCAD as well as review consultants and suppliers' work
• Strong on the control side, with a solid understanding of how voltage support, frequency response, black start works.
• Able to provide required inputs to the Scada / Systems Integration and P&C groups.

• High capacity for change and experience of leading others through change.
• Proven ability in defining early Development Projects, giving accurate, concise and timely advice to development teams, including technical solutions and estimates.
• Makes recommendations on staff requirements to ensure delivery of projects (large packages) as planned and within budget.
