Responsibilities

This position provides corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance for the chilled water and steam systems, associated support equipment, back-flow preventers, and critical measuring equipment associated with Florida State University Central Utility Plant (CUP) operations. Installs electrical apparatus, fixtures, and equipment. Responsible for training other CUP maintenance employees.

  • Ensures the plant's utilities are properly functioning to receive steam, chilled water, hot water, compressed air, electricity, and gas. Inspects, repairs, and maintains boilers, steam turbines, emergency generators, water pumps, fuel oil pumps, compressors, chillers, buildings, fuel oil storage tanks, and all support equipment and piping systems at the Central Utilities and Satellite Plants. Removes and/or replaces pumps, fans, and electric motors. Repairs/rebuilds pumps, fans, and electric motors for system modifications, to be reinstalled and returned to service. Packs pumps, glands, valves, and lubrication equipment to reduce product loss and to ensure safe and efficient operation. Performs diagnostic tests for corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance on all related equipment. Performs routine inspections of water distribution systems, rotary equipment, and related components. Troubleshoots and calibrates flow meters. Performs vibration analysis. Maintains related records and CUP logs. Operates University vehicle as necessary.
  • Installs electrical apparatus, hangers and brackets to support electrical products, fixtures, switches, circuit breaker panels, relays, and other electrical control and distribution equipment. Installs safety and distribution components, pneumatic solenoid valves, switches, photo eyes, control panels etc. Inspects circuit breakers and other electrical components for faults. Performs maintenance procedures to keep wiring, lighting, and control systems in good working order. Prepares proper mechanical joints through precise cutting, welding, brazing, threading cementing, and caulking. Devises and fabricates special jigs and fixtures to perform required tasks.
  • Responsible for training staff on how to maintain and service CUP equipment and related components. Maintains knowledge of the National Electrical Code as it applies to CUP. Complies with state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations, and adheres to quality assurance programs and safety standards. Performs related duties as assigned. Completes all assigned training and certifications related to boilers, chillers, pumps, motors and steam boiler compliance.
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to two years. Technical or vocational degree in appropriate mechanical trade area may substitute for experience.

  • Knowledge of the practices and the ability to perform skilled carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other related trades work.
  • Knowledge of and ability to identify safety hazards and necessary safety precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Ability to utilize problem solving and technical skills related to the position responsibilities to complete assigned tasks.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely operate machinery, tools, equipment, and materials used in area of work.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to effectively train and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • A valid State of Florida Class E, or Georgia driver's license, or the ability to obtain prior to hire.
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.

Other Information

The position incumbent is required to be accessible and available to return to work during off-duty hours.
Per FSU policy, Pay Additives, incumbents are eligible to receive on-call pay. Eligibility is limited to USPS employees who shall be informed by the department via memorandum of the on-call assignment, except during an emergency.

Anticipated Salary Range

The minimum hiring salary for this position is $36,250.00 and is to commensurate with experience and education.
