We are on the hunt for a Senior Environmental Specialist to be based at our Long Beach, CA (Dominguez) plant.

  • We are not offering visa sponsorship or full relocation for this role.

The Senior Environmental Specialist role will provide environmental compliance support to our Ecoservices Division West Coast operations and assist with other matters including management/coordination of remediation activites.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate effectively and work in a collaborative fashion with all functions of the business, operations, and maintenance functions to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and support business growth/initiatives. Be visible, conduct field and site inspections to enforce adherence to laws, regulations and employer policies governing environmental compliance and responsible operating practices.
  • Serve as facility liaison with regulatory agencies during inspections or regulatory negotiations. Communicate and collaborate with operations and environmental team members to implement/sustain site compliance programs and remediation obligations.
  • Maintain/implement systems to ensure the necessary collection and submission of data required to satisfy environmental permit and reporting requirements (air, water, waste regulatory requirements). Must be able to monitor regulatory developments and work with site/HSE team members to develop/implement solutions.
  • Develop and manage initiatives to promote continuous HSE improvement by participation in site meetings, incident investigations, training, and compliance auditing.
  • Assist as needed in investigation of incidents and non-compliance events to determine contributing factors and recommend remedial action to prevent reoccurrence. Ensure proper communication of all incidents/non-compliance events consistent with corporate procedures.
  • Apply HSE management systems to conform to standards such as RC14001®.
  • Additional responsibilities and changes in responsibilities may be made at the discretion of the PQ Corporation VP of Environment and Sustainability.



Requirements:

  • BS in Chemical Engineering or similar engineering with ten (10) or more years' environmental experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and computer skills. Must be proficient in serving as a change agent within the manufacturing environment and working with site management and Health and Safety team members to improve overall HSE performance.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations, with emphasis on local (e.g. SCAQMD/RECLAIM) regulatory requirements as well as relevant state (DTSC) and federal regulations specific to Refining Services manufacturing operations.
  • Must be an independent, self-motivated individual with the ability to multi-task and administer a broad range of duties including; providing timely resolution to issues that arise, counseling/coaching operations personnel, and providing technical interpretation of policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform physical inspections of manufacturing areas, warehouses, utility spaces, and construction sites.
  • Ability to proactively address complex regulatory issues and work with site personnel to implement sustainable solutions.
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment and influence / motivate diverse teams to achieve a unified goal.
  • Ability to provide flexible judgment and solutions to concerns and/or opportunities.
  • Ability to travel 25% of the time.
