Job Description

The Team

The Advanced Research group within Intuitive Surgical is searching for a hands-on engineer with a focus on the design of next generation advanced energy catheter instruments, contributing to the exploration of novel concepts for new energy applications. This role is an exciting opportunity to join a small and innovative team in the early phases of product development.

The Advanced Research team at Intuitive is a cross-functional team dedicated to the creation of the innovative medical robotic platforms, technologies and programs. We create transformational technologies in order to address the major pain points and unmet needs in our healthcare system. Our goal is to create the future of healthcare through platforms and ecosystems that empower providers and teams in order to deliver transformational life-enhancing care. We are recruiting for a Senior Electromechanical Engineer, Advanced Energy, in Sunnyvale, CA.

Primary Function of the Position


The Senior Electromechanical Engineer, Advanced Energy, is responsible for the technical development of advanced energy products at Intuitive. Their focus will be on research of advanced energy technology as well as development of catheters and instruments, contributing to the exploration of a novel system concept for a new application of surgical robotics. They will be a responsible member of the Advanced Research team supporting innovative technology development and commercialization. They will have both the technical depth to resolve complex electrical, mechanical, material and design issues, as well as the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to troubleshoot and root cause higher system level issues. They must have strong technical depth in relevant areas, and have a track record of successful product development efforts. Using their subject matter expertise, exceptional communication skills and through cross-functional collaboration, they will investigate and develop advanced energy applications for novel clinical applications across our robotic surgical systems.

They must excel in a high-energy, focused, small-team environment, and have a commitment to high quality prototypes and concepts. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required, as well as a commitment to high product quality.


Responsibilities

  • Work in a small, cross-functional project team to perform research, develop and verify new concepts for advanced energy catheters and other flexible surgical instruments
  • Develop, implement, assess and document new test methods, solutions and designs according to corporate standards and departmental operating procedures
  • Hands-on assembly and testing of equipment, fixtures and devices to support proof of concept, design development, pre-clinical and V&V activities
  • Perform tests, critically analyze results and make design changes or recommendations to the design team
  • Investigate and determine root cause of emerging technology, design, manufacturing, or material defects
  • Research and review literature and prior art to inform technology development, design decisions and system architectures
  • Observe clinical cases and participate in interviews with clinical experts to inform designs
  • Provide support for pre-clinical and clinical labs
  • Development and documentation of design documentation including but not limited to: design requirements, design outputs, and risk analyses using appropriate change control procedures
  • Establish individual goals consistent with overall project goals

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum education: BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, related engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Typical minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, minimum 6 years with a masters
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional research and development teams
  • Crucial to have hands-on experience in application of both mechanical and electrical principles to technology development and/or catheter/instrument R&D
  • Experience with electromechanical research and development in the medical device industry
  • Experience with bench and hybrid tissue test method development for both research and development.
  • Experience with FDA QSR 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, IEC 60601 and other related external standards
  • Familiar with all phases of the product development lifecycle; including proof-of-concept, design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer
  • Some experience with plastics, plastics molding, extrusions, testing, process equipment, adhesives, and/or disposable medical products needed
  • Some experience with Nitinol or other superelastic / shape memory materials is a strong plus
  • High autonomy and ability to work independently under limited supervision to determine and develop approach to solutions.
  • Some knowledge of component manufacturing processes, catheter development tools and prototyping equipment
  • Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms; SolidWorks preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written & oral) across all levels and organizations
  • Commitment:
  • Must be available to work full-time and commute/relocate to Sunnyvale, CA
  • Up to 10% travel. Some international travel may be required.
