Job Overview

The Senior Cluster Research Administrator (CRA) manages the Research Administration Liaison Team, including CRAs and Grants Managers; and serves as a subject matter expert on the Main Campus for research administration, providing oversight and coordination across the clusters.

The CRAs and Grants Managers are assigned to faculty members within clusters of academic disciplines. Each CRA supports faculty throughout the life cycle of sponsored projects, including identifying funding opportunities, proposal development and submission, award negotiation, set-up and management, and finally, award close-out.

The Senior CRA is on the front line and leverages good working relationships with department chairs and faculty within their disciplinary cluster to better serve the needs of researchers and to foster a culture of excellent service amongst the cluster staff members. They play the role of CRA for one cluster, and oversee the activities of the other CRAs and the respective Grants Managers.

Work Interactions

Reporting to Vice Provost for Research, the Senior CRA plays the role of CRA for one cluster, and oversees the activities of the other CRAs and the respective Grants Managers.

  • In their role as a regular CRA, the Senior CRA on one hand serves as a liaison between PIs in the cluster of departments or units to which they are assigned; and on the other hand, serves the staff of ORS, SPFO, OHSP and other research administration offices
  • All CRAs in the RALT report to the Senior CRA, as does the Grants Manager assigned to the Senior CRA's cluster. Through their supervisory role, the Senior CRA ensures faculty across all clusters are supported by their respective CRAs.
  • The Senior CRA oversees and manages the assignment of tasks and projects that cut across clusters - for example, training opportunities, system updates, and improvements.
  • The Senior CRA manages the implementation of the Provost's internal grant program, working closely with the Vice Provost for Research and their administrative assistant.
  • The Senior CRA leads the communications efforts of the Vice Provost for Research, including drafting and management of a quarterly Campus Research Administration Newsletter, curation of faculty research news, other ad hoc communications


Qualifications
  • Master's degree or the equivalent skills
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant research administration and sponsored funding experience, including proposal development, pre-to-post award grants and contracts administration, and post-award management in higher education and/or non-profit settings
  • Specific knowledge of major sponsors, such as NIH, NSF, USAID, DoD, and various foundations - and experience working with international sponsors and sub-awardees
  • Expert knowledge of federal and non-federal rules and regulations relating to sponsored grant and/or contract activity - for example, FAR, 2 CFR 200
  • Experience in negotiating grants and contracts with sponsors and sub-awardees while maintaining strong partnerships
  • Proven experience with financial systems, accounting, and cost accounting standards as they pertain to grants and contracts management
  • High level of experience/comfort with technology (MS Office, Google suite, electronic research administration systems, sponsored accounting systems - for example, Workday, Mailchimp Demonstrated ability to promptly and efficiently respond to faculty and staff requests
  • Excellent skills in analytical, critical thinking, as well as verbal and written communication skills


Preferred qualifications
  • Certified Research Administrator Certification or combination of on-the- job experience and other relevant certifications
  • Experience as a team lead or manager
