The programs and services of Georgetown's Division of Student Affairs support students and enrich their learning experience. Learning takes place in all parts of students' lives and is centered in their academic experiences. This learning is enriched by their living environments and their engagement in a wide range of co-curricular pursuits - from community service to athletics and from student government to the performing arts. An array of services is also there to support students - to assure their health and wellness, assist with their career development, and meet a variety of personal and academic needs.

Job Overview

The Division of Student Affairs provides programs and services that promote and enhance student learning and development and seeks an innovative, forward-thinking, and inclusive leader to serve as its next Senior Associate Vice President/Dean of Students.

Reporting to the Vice President, they represent the Division across the university, are a member of the Vice President's leadership team, and hold the most senior one in the Division following the Vice President,

Assuming the prime leadership in the absence or at the request of the VP, the Senior AVP/Dean assumes a major leadership role in the definition, implementation and assessment of a student centered learning environment aligned with the mission and values of a Jesuit and Catholic university.

They are charged by a recent appointed VPSA to lead strategic initiatives in the following areas:

  • Establish empathetic, supportive, and developmental leadership for a talented team of professionals to include retention within a Jesuit framework
  • Provide a vision and strategy to further distinguish the Georgetown student experience
  • A parent and family engagement strategy
  • The development and implementation of restorative practices in conduct and community development
  • Student and alumni engagement
  • Developing a system of support for students directly impacted by bias
  • Prioritize health and wellness through direct and indirect action to ensure the success and well-being of students


The Senior AVP/Dean serves as the senior university officer in charge of addressing complex student issues in behavior, student conduct, mental health, and related issues. In these key student support leadership roles, they are at the center of managing some of the University's most critical risks - and of assuring the well-being and safety of students.

They support the mission of the University by working in an integrated and collaborative manner with staff throughout the Division and the deans and faculty of the various colleges; and provide leadership for programs in support of the University's Catholic and Jesuit mission and identity.

Work Interactions

The Senior AVP/Dean is the second most senior leader in Student Affairs and supervises several key offices.

They play a broad and strategic leadership role for the entire Division, and directly supervise strategic initiatives and staffing related to the priorities of the Division expressed by the Vice President of Student Affairs.

As well, they provided institutional-level leadership on issues of student behavior, well-being, and other student-focused issues.

Qualifications
  • Doctorate
  • Extensive professional experience in Student Affairs or a closely related field within higher education
  • Experienced in supervising professional staff, and counseling/advising/support skills at a sophisticated level
  • Experienced in presentations in public to a range of audiences, and to interact with colleagues, students, parents, board members, and community leaders in an effective and polished manner.
  • Familiarity with and comfort promoting the University's distinctive Catholic and Jesuit mission and identity
  • Strong awareness of federal and local laws and guidance governing student conduct, Title IX compliance, and general legal/compliance issues in student affairs
  • Mature judgment in extremely complex interpersonal, behavioral, and mental health situations
  • Ability to make presentations in public to a range of audiences, and to interact with colleagues, students, parents, board members, and community leaders in an effective and polished manner
