Position Summary

The Carlyle Group seeks to hire a Senior Associate within the AlpInvest Co-Investment team.

AlpInvest Partners is one of the largest and well-established private equity investors globally, with nearly $75 billion committed to investments since inception. AlpInvest is wholly owned by The Carlyle Group and serves as the private equity multi-manager adviser within the Carlyle Investment Solutions business segment.

AlpInvest's activities cover a broad range of private equity, including Primary Fund commitments, Secondary Investments and Co-Investments. The firm's investments span the full spectrum of private equity: buyouts, venture, growth capital, energy, mezzanine, and distressed. AlpInvest offers customized private equity solutions to single clients through separately managed accounts as well as commingled funds. AlpInvest has a large and diverse base of about 400 investors globally, including sovereign wealth funds, public and private pension funds, insurance companies, and family offices.

AlpInvest's Co-Investment team invests directly in companies, providing both equity and mezzanine financing across the spectrum of private equity transactions alongside its GP partners. Investments are made globally across all industries and company stages by a team consisting of 80 investment professionals located in New York, Indianapolis, Amsterdam and Hong Kong.

The Co-Investment Program is designed to work alongside private equity GPs throughout the lifecycle of a deal. AlpInvest Partners engages early in the deal process and actively supports the lead sponsor underwriting a bid for portfolio company investments in addition to acting as a supportive partner in a post close syndication to finance buyouts. The team has invested $11 billion in over 270 transactions with 125+ private equity firms including Blackstone, KKR, CVC Capital, Apollo, TA Associates, Advent International, Permira, Thoma Bravo, Charlesbank, TSG Consumer, Hellman & Friedman, Nautic Partners, GTCR and Littlejohn.

Investments are made across various industries in both the middle-market and large buyout segments of the market.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

This hire will be a key member of the investment team working in a flat team environment directly with senior investment professionals. Key job functions include:

  • Lead evaluation and execution of transactions reporting to Managing Directors and Principals
  • Develop and mentor junior investment professionals and external advisors
  • Manage due diligence process and interview mgmt. teams
  • Determine appropriate valuations, legal/ tax structures and capital structures
  • Prepare memos and recommendations for investment committee
  • Negotiate transaction agreements and financing documents
  • Monitor existing portfolio companies through interactions with GPs and participation in board meetings and identify opportunities for performance improvement and value realization.
  • Prepare periodic investor updates and develop relationships with the Co-investment team's LP base and fundraising activities


Qualifications

The target candidate will have a minimum of 5 and up to 10 years of experience, with prior experience in private equity investing. Successful candidates will be team players with the confidence to interact with general partners through frequent direct interaction and ability to thrive in a fast-pace and entrepreneurial environment. The target candidate's background will include:
  • Familiarity with leveraged buyouts and other private equity and debt transactions
  • Advanced financial modeling capability and ability to interpret financial metrics when analyzing investment opportunities
  • Experience with outside-in sector research and comparative analyses
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Education:
  • BA required, MBA is a plus
