Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Clinical Manager has 24-hour accountability for specific patient care unit(s) that delivers nursing care. This includes clinical services, quality & regulatory readiness, financial and operational management and managing & engaging people to achieve organizational goals.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Leadership & Communication

  • Demonstrates ability to lead by example
  • Understands & is accountable for nursing practice standards for all who deliver nursing care; knowledgeable of the Indiana nurse practice act & the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics. Able to ensure practice from all levels of staff to meet those standards; RN, LPN, paramedic, patient care technician, clerical staff & students
  • Rounds for outcomes with patients, families, staff, physicians & units
  • Demonstrates understanding & supports the role of shared governance at the unit & hospital wide level to help in engaging employees to achieve/exceed in organizational goals
  • Demonstrates effective problem solving, critical thinking & decision-making skills
  • Promotes a healthy work environment, presents self as an open, accessible leader who seeks to understand first & then help get staff /patient care issues to a win-win solution
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills in working with staff, patients/families, physicians and external contacts
  • Consistently & effectively communicates the unit /organizational goals to staff; rounding, staff meetings, unit newsletters, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize & support successes
  • Serves as a mentor for new clinical managers & nursing leadership students
  • Active participation in shared governance & other hospital committees, task forces, projects as needed Service:
  • Demonstrates understanding of the customer service concept; applies to personal practice, ensures patient satisfaction data & feedback are reviewed with staff on a consistent basis
  • Objectively investigates all service complaints to provide appropriate customer service follow up with action plan if needed
  • Establishes & maintains ability to have collegial/effective working relationships with the medical leadership & staff who work in the unit

Quality:
  • Conducts & reviews continuous quality improvement/risk management programs at the units(s) level in a collaborative manner with multi-disciplinary colleagues
  • Assist in identifying appropriate internal department controls & monitors using the unit based scorecards available for quality, service and regulatory compliance
  • Understands/implements the Joint Commission standards & other regulatory requirements. Able to effectively communicate these to the staff /physicians within the unit

Financial and Operational Management:
  • Participates in the budget management/development
  • Monitors budget compliance, analyze variances & develop action plans as needed
  • Utilizes staffing resources to meet patient care needs, foster safe work environment & assure quality care while meeting budget expectations
  • Monitor & adjust staffing patterns to meet unit productivity in coordination with shift coordinators
  • Provides payroll oversight

People:
  • Creates a culture that fosters a healthy work environment as demonstrated by low turnover rates, voice of the employee & NDNQI survey results
  • Ensures staff attend /participate in appropriate training for their unit/role
  • Conducts staff meetings on a consistent basis to share unit/hospital performance
  • Meets with staff individually to discuss performance, accountability & professional development plans
  • Effectively coaches, develops, mentors & gives corrective action that is fair/consistent with the organizational goals/policies

Growth:
  • Demonstrates ability to bring multi-disciplinary team together to achieve the service/program goals.
  • Demonstrates ability to monitor plan's effectiveness & changes course as needed for that plan to be successful.

Job Requirements

  • RN with master's degree is preferred; bachelor's degree in nursing is required. (Grandfather current managers)
  • 3 years clinical experience plus 2 years of leadership experience or leading complex projects is required.
  • Current license or valid permit to practice professional nursing in state of Indiana required
  • Maintains professional development through a variety of activities such as ; national certification, ongoing education, conferences, mentorship's, teaching and participating in nursing organizations
