Job Purpose

Come join our AkzoNobel Team in Strongsville, Ohio!

The Researcher position will conduct and support polymer synthesis activities for Resins Technology projects.

The key responsibility of this position is to design, synthesize, and test new polymers for successful adoption by New Product Development (NPD) teams for use in various high performance coatings applications, with the focus on can coatings and coil applications.

Key Accountabilities

  • Managing the effective planning of requirements for assigned projects;
  • Understanding of the application requirements and translation to polymer design;
  • Planning and execution of polymer syntheses;
  • Submitting requests for polymer analysis and evaluation of polymer properties;
  • Preparing coated panels and evaluating for basic coating properties;
  • Ordering raw materials and maintaining them in the chemical inventory;
  • Facilitating transfer of polymer chemistries to New Product Development team and assisting scale up efforts;
  • Presenting results at project meetings and preparing summary reports as required

The successful candidate should:
  • Enjoy polymer synthesis and be handy with laboratory glassware and equipment;
  • Have excellent understanding of structure-performance relationships in polymers for coatings;
  • Be capable of testing and proactively developing new synthetic methodologies and new polymers;
  • Be proficient with the calculations of polymer properties;
  • Have solid understanding of modern polymer characterization methods;
  • Have excellent communications skills and ability to collaborate with all business functions;
  • Continuously keep abreast of relevant scientific and patent literature;
  • Adhere to AkzoNobel values and high safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in polymer science or related field and at least 3 years of polymer synthesis experience.
