Research Technologist
We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work with us as a Research Technologist who will conduct an original research project with primary responsibility as part of a team. This position is available in Molecular Neuroscience, Synaptic Plasticity/Learning and Memory, and Disorders of the Nervous System.

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, the Research Technologist is responsible for performing routine laboratory duties, conducting experiments to advance scientific knowledge, contributing to the general maintenance of the laboratory including mouse colony management. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.

This individual exercises basic computer skills and learns and applies task-specific software necessary to perform laboratory functions. Communicates and cooperates effectively with the faculty investigator and with other laboratory personnel, to facilitate the research efforts of the laboratory and maintain a collegial and collaborative workplace. Communicates effectively and professionally with vendors, administrative personnel, and other Johns Hopkins colleagues.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains accurate data records, follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments.
  • These may require other associated specialized laboratory methods including tissue culture and molecular biology techniques and confocal microscopy, for which training will be supplied.
  • Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, light microscope, and thermocycler; keeps the laboratory clean and in working order.
  • Following experimental protocols, performs general mouse husbandry (setting up matings, weaning, tissue harvest for genotyping, ear and toe marking), monitors animals and maintains health records, may perform mouse behavioral assays, and sacrifices and dissects animal tissues as required in accordance with USDA, AALAC and IACUC guidelines.
  • Prepares tissue for study utilizing histochemical techniques.
  • Completes annual university biohazard/safety training, as appropriate, and complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, or related field required.
  • Prior research experience in neuroscience or molecular biology, familiarity with required laboratory techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior research experience with mice would be advantageous.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • English language skills required.


Physical Requirements:
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10 lbs. or less.
  • Ability to move about.

Starting Salary Range: $15.00 - $20.00/hr (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
