Primary Purpose of Position:

The purpose of this position is to supplement the Power Electronics team. Candidates are expected to provide knowledge in control systems hardware and software development and deliver expertise in the integration of embedded controls in experimental prototype power electronic systems. The Embedded Systems Controls Engineer will be responsible for designing and developing control solutions for real-time applications predominantly used to control power electronic converters and equipment. The ideal candidate will be a team player with excellent communication skills and proficient in various real-time operating systems. The candidate must be proficient with simulation tools such as MATLAB Simulink and/or PSIM while having software development experience in C/C++ and FPGA programming.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

  • Collect, document, and refine the requirements of power electronic converter applications and develop associated control system specifications for the same.
  • Develop functional block diagrams, the control algorithms, and embedded software to meet the specifications, as well as test plans for validation.
  • Accept responsibility for design, code development, analysis, and documentation of control system development for novel converter/drive topologies,
  • Write real-time software utilizing Simulink/xPC Target and other similar tools for a given set of requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and lead discussions related to controller design, development, and applications.
  • Write and evaluate software test plans to ensure compliance with the software requirements.
Minimum Education/Experience:

  • MS Electrical and/or Computer Engineering (BS with extensive experience will also be considered)
  • 0-2 years with an MS degree
  • 2-5 years with a BS degree
  • The candidate must be proficient with simulation tools such as MATLAB Simulink and/or PSIM while having experience with coding in C/C++ and FPGA programming tools.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Since this is a critical aspect of the success of product development, a combination of knowledge and experience in power electronics control theory methods is essential.
  • Fluent and highly experienced in power electronics control concepts for dc/dc, dc/ac grid-interactive, and dc/ac grid-independent power conversion systems.
  • Strong coding skills in C, C++, and FPGA programming.
  • Embedded controls architecture and coding.
  • Experienced in power electronics development processes and documentation.
  • Practiced hands-on power electronics testing.
  • Conversant with power electronics control parameters for feedback control design.
  • Familiar with applications of power electronic products and sequence of controls for different applications.
  • Knowledgeable in photovoltaic, battery, renewable energy, and conventional generation control schemes with power electronics.
  • Fluent in conducting control and software design reviews in a diverse group including code reviews and methods of conducting reviews.
  • Experienced in taking full ownership of the software and control design.
  • Able to do technical writing and create instructions to document for other areas of the design/test team as well as the users of the developed control.
  • Task and deadline-oriented, self-starter/driven, leadership.
  • Experience with real-time digital simulations is a plus.
