Description

Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking applicants for a Research Data Analyst position at the Walla Walla campus.

General Description:

The Research Data Analyst will be a key team member in the department of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (IRE) and play an integral role in the transformative agenda of the institution by leveraging data and insights to influence strategy and decision-making. This individual will be responsible for the extraction, transformation, and analysis of complex data sets to answer key institutional questions. The candidate will need to be proficient in handling diverse types of data and formats, ranging from raw files to structured relational databases. The ability to present these insights through high-quality visualizations tailored to multiple audiences is crucial. A successful candidate will need to show that they can balance working as part of a team with a high degree of independence, managing competing priorities and overseeing projects.

The position is 100% grant funded through Sept 30, 2024, and thereafter split between grant and college support. This position will be fully institutionalized and funded by college funds at the close of the grant cycle.


Essential Functions:

Data Transformation:

  • Convert unstructured data into structured, normalized formats suitable for relational databases.
  • Utilize data conversion and integration tools for seamless data handling.

  • Data Management:
  • Handle raw data in CSV, JSON, and other relevant formats.
  • Assure data quality and integrity by implementing relevant validation techniques.

  • Data Visualization:
  • Generate intuitive and insightful visualizations utilizing tools such as SSRS, R, Tableau, and Power BI.
  • Adapt the visualization format based on the needs and comprehension levels of multiple audiences, from operational staff to executive leadership.

  • Strategic Analysis:
  • Interpret data results and offer recommendations to the Director of Institutional Research & Effectiveness and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with multiple departments to identify opportunities for process improvement and reporting.
  • Report on institutional and grant key performance indicators.
  • Produce reports on student success (e.g., credit accumulation, retention, and completion), demographics, educational interventions, and other subjects as required. Reports may require the application of both quantitative and qualitative methods, use of advanced statistical analysis, and comparison between cohorts based on specific variables.

  • Technical Support and Collaboration:
  • Offer technical expertise and support to other departments as needed.
  • Work closely with IT and other data-related departments to achieve strategic objectives.

  • Miscellaneous
  • Help foster a culture of inquiry, improvement, and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Represent the office on collegewide committees and/or project-based working groups as appropriate.

  • Ethical Standards: Demonstrate ethics, integrity, and sound professional judgement.


  • Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Proven technical expertise in a data analysis role, preferably in an educational or research-oriented context.
  • Proficiency in SQL and other data manipulation languages.
  • Proficiency with relational database tables and schemas, such as Oracle and SQL. Experience with PeopleSoft preferred.
  • Demonstrable experience in handling raw data files in CSV, JSON formats.
  • Expertise in data visualization tools such as SSRS, R, Tableau, and Power BI.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the college.

    Conditions/Terms of Employment


    This position is in a bargaining unit for which AFT is the exclusive representative.

    This is a full-time overtime eligible professional position. Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment. WWCC participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. Official college transcripts required at time of hire. Candidates may be subject to a criminal history background check as a condition of employment. Information from the background check may not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position. The college is a tobacco free institution.

    Work is performed almost exclusively indoors in an office environment. Exposure to hazards is limited to those commonly found in office environments. Work is performed in an indoor, multi-level office setting; sitting at a desk or computer station, light lifting may be required. This contract position work schedule will typically be Monday through Friday 8-hours each day. During the summer, work schedule is Monday through Thursday 10-hours each day. Some travel may be required, and is typically local or regional for training.

    Compensation:

    Annual salary range: $65,000-75,000. The college has an excellent benefit program including paid sick leave; paid vacation leave; medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance; retirement and two optional deferred compensation programs. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). All administrative exempt staff set aside 1% of their gross salary in a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) (VEBA). All exempt employees are required to participate in this program. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.
