The Carver College of Medicine department of Microbiology and Immunology (Dr. Manicassamy lab) is seeking a Research Assistant to conduct research focused on evaluating the efficacy of antivirals and therapeutics in cell culture and animal models.

Duties to include:

• Perform studies with influenza viruses in BSL2 and BSL3 laboratories. Training will be provided to perform work in BSL3 laboratory
  
• Maintain cell lines by feeding, splitting/passaging, and cryopreservation/storage
  
• Perform infection in cell lines and assess viral titers by plaque assay. Evaluate the efficacy of therapeutics to inhibit viral replication
  
• Perform mouse experiment in Biosafety Level 2 and Biosafety Level 3 with infectious agent; Training will be provided for handling mice in BSL2 and BSL3
  
• Perform routine experimental procedures in the animal models, observe for signs of phenotype, illness, injury or stress. Execute basic medical treatments of the mice, including the administration of drugs
  
• Harvest mouse tissue including dissecting brain, blood, and other organs as needed and perform viral titration
  
• Collect and track data in an organized and logical manner, keep data records up to date, perform data entry for reports and maintain records of methods used

Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Cell biology, or Biology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  
• Experience in mammalian cell culture and sterile techniques
  
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and organizational skills
  
• Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Prism software
  
• Ability to work independently while being reliable and efficient with time management
  

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience in handling mice
  
• Experience in fluorescent microscopy and flow cytometry techniques
