Recovery Support Specialist - 473402
SUMMARY:

The Recovery Support Specialist is responsible for helping to build and grow a diverse, positive, and inclusive Recovery-Ready community. A Recovery-Ready Campus is a place where individuals are empowered to ask for help, intervene with empathy when they notice someone struggling with alcohol or other drug use, and respect recovery by offering encouragement and celebrating success. The Specialist promotes well-being by helping to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate University of Richmond's recovery support initiatives. These initiatives are designed to engage and empower people in recovery or considering recovery, as well as recovery allies. While students are the primary focus of the endeavors of this position, supporting the well-being and health of students necessitates considering and supporting the welfare of faculty, staff, and alumni. The Specialist focuses on nurturing a Recovery-Ready Campus through the role of educator, facilitator, and mentor, and connects individuals to appropriate on- and off-campus clinical providers. The Recovery Support Specialist supports Health Promotion programming for Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) outreach for the entire campus, and educational efforts including teaching WELL 101 courses, administrative tasks, and hours at the Welcome Desk for engagement to the campus community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Recovery Support and Advocacy

  • Helps develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate the University's recovery support initiatives, including but not limited to oversight of the Recovery Community at University of Richmond
  • Provides direct support to students in recovery or considering recovery through the role of educator, group facilitator, and mentor
  • Serves as a community resource for addiction and recovery topics and provides referrals to both on- and off-campus resources
  • Uses knowledge gained from assessment to adjust approaches and initiatives
  • Works directly with Marketing and Membership Coordinator to assist in creation and dissemination of marketing and other publication materials to promote, strengthen, and grow recovery support initiatives
  • Ensures that all initiatives and programs are positive, developmentally appropriate, empowering, and inclusive to a diverse community
  • Responds to recovery support inquiries from students, family members, and other campus or community members
  • Supports campus-wide outreach and educational efforts; including the teaching of (2) WELL 101 courses

University Partnerships and Collaboration
  • Develops partnerships with campus partners and local recovery and treatment resources to ensure support services, including 12-step and other recovery meetings
  • Maintains relationships between the Recovery Community at University of Richmond and the NRV community, along with state and national communities
  • Works shifts at the Well-Being Center Welcome Desk for engagement to the campus community

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Cultural competence related to recovery language, communities, and resources
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to be flexible, work independently, and be proactive with pursuing and strengthening partnerships
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice and creating inclusive environments
  • Ability to ethically maintain standards of professional care and confidentiality
  • Ability to participate in continuing professional development activities to maintain competency
  • Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion or recovery support initiatives preferred
  • Ability to relate effectively to and engage graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, administration, and community agencies preferred
  • Experience collaborating, volunteering, or working with recovery community organizations preferred
  • Experience in a collegiate recovery community as a staff member, intern, or member preferred
  • Understanding of student development issues, emerging needs, and interests preferred
  • Certified Health Education Specialist certification preferred

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in Public Health, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or closely related field

WORK HOURS:
  • Part-time, non-exempt limited term position (not to exceed two years)
  • Schedule varies according to program needs, approximately 25-35 hours per week for 42 weeks (off June, July and 2 weeks over winter break)
  • Partial leave accruals (no health insurance)

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Hiring Rate $25.00 per hour
