Job Summary


The Office of Undergraduate Education at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Academic Advisor, located in Ralphie's Advising Help Lab! This role is responsible for building relationships with undergraduate students and fostering success by providing multidisciplinary academic and developmental advising for all units and interests across all colleges and schools at CU Boulder. The generalist advising role works with all student populations across campus to empower and support them in exploration, decision-making, and working toward their choice of a major and an outline of goals for their undergraduate career at CU-Boulder and beyond. This position plays an active role as part of a collaborative, innovative, and welcoming team within Ralphie's Advising Help Lab.
Key responsibilities of the Academic Advisor are:

  • working with current and newly admitted students across all colleges, schools, and programs.
  • providing comprehensive advising, support and encouragement along their journey of college student development, and connection to campus wide resources supporting student success.
  • practicing a generalist approach to supporting all undergraduate students in their journey of exploration, discovery, and active participation in their undergraduate education.
  • creating supportive connections with students campus wide, maintaining an expansive knowledge base across many subject areas, colleges, schools, programs, and their connections to career paths.
  • practicing a keen understanding of all related functional areas on campus.

Other important aspects of this role include liaising with individuals across campus in all student and academic affairs departments, a commitment to active and continual professional growth and development, remaining current on student development research, and strong dedication to team collaboration, communication, eliminating barriers to student success, and innovation.

Who We Are


The Office of Undergraduate Education (UE) is a campus office reporting to the Provost. Its charge is to examine the entire undergraduate student experience, assess outcomes, identify gaps, and launch and support student-facing campus initiatives. Current key projects in UE include a focus on first-year academic programs with the development of First Year Seminars; the coordination of undergraduate academic policies; the development of a coordinated campus advising structure; and the coordination and assessment of campus retention and persistence initiatives. We are currently working on a two-year initiative, Foundations of Excellence, which is focused on optimizing the first-year experience of our undergraduates.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Student Support
  • Providing interpersonal, individual and small group general advising and individualized support to students (via scheduled appointments, drop-ins, delivered either in person, on zoom, or via phone) and related administrative duties;
  • Resolving administrative problems and/or referring students to appropriate campus services;
  • Student traffic will vary over the course of the year so included in this role is providing proactive outreach and engagement with students who are identified as needing additional support through campus-wide programs.
  • Students use RAHL for advising and registration related concerns such as registration holds, inability to locate their primary advisor or are in the process of changing colleges, schools, or majors. The advisor will provide generalist advising support to a variety of majors or units during staffing changes to best support student success.
  • The advisor will follow all advising protocols and use campus advising tools such as Buff Portal Advising, CU-SIS, On Base, and DARS and will maintain a current, multidisciplinary knowledge base at all times.
  • Assisting students in planning for and making informed decisions about their academic journey, and potential career or graduate school direction; they help students to assess their interests, values and academic skills; they teach students how to navigate the systems, academic processes and policies at CU-Boulder; and they work with students to personalize their academic path, including offering co-curricular guidance that complements their goals and leading them in regular long term planning. Advisors also offer availability to students’ overall support network, including parents and families.
  • This position will offer assistance to academic departments in need of temporary advising support for students by taking on short term advising caseloads as needed.

Develop Advising & Departmental Partnerships
  • Liaising with partners across campus in support of Ralphie’s Advising Help Lab initiatives. This will include regular targeted meetings with college/school advising units and undergraduate education staff to ensure continuity of service and consistent referral processes.
  • Actively engaging in planning, assessment, and collaboration as a member of the cross-campus team located within the Office of Undergraduate Education including the Director of Campus Advising Initiatives & Strategy and Program Director for Advisor Training, Development, and Assessment, which includes regular meetings and collaborative training.
  • Attending campus wide organizational meetings and participate in cross-campus committees as necessary.

Strategic-Planning & Student Success Initiatives
  • Planning and collaborating with the Undergraduate Education team, including regular team meetings, trainings and evaluations. Advisor will assess outcomes and incorporate student experience into future planning for Ralphie’s Advising Help Lab initiatives.

Professional Development
  • Professional development, including but not limited to relevant conferences, mentoring opportunities, coursework, workshops, and research.

  • Hybrid work environment with minimum three days in office. Subject to change.

What We Can Offer


The salary for this position is $50,000 - $54,636. Current CU Senior Academic Advising employees are eligible for transfer at their current level.

  • Completed Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of one year of professional academic advising experience in a higher education setting.
