We are currently looking for a Radiation Safety Professional to support our in-country sales and service operations. Working within an integrated Healthineers North America management system (ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001), the ideal candidate will drive radiation protection and other Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) initiatives to cultivate safe and compliant operations at customer sites as well as our Cary, NC campus. This will include maintenance of radioactive material licenses and X-ray registrations/licenses, assessment of program implementation, and support for regulatory agency inspections. The position will report directly to the Chief Radiation Safety Officer, within the EHS function of Quality and Technology.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement programs to ensure installation and service activities meet and/or exceed Federal, state, internal Healthineers, customer and other stakeholder requirements for radiation protection. Duties include ensuring personnel are properly registered to perform X-ray Service, Sales and Training; amending/renewing Radioactive Material Licenses and X-ray Registrations; maintaining records associated with Radiation Safety Programs; and assuring all regulatory required reports and submissions are accurate and filed on a timely basis. Serve as a point of contact for State and Federal agencies regarding radiation safety and assist with personnel dosimetry as required.
  • Collaborate with individuals at various levels throughout the organization as well as customers, suppliers and regulators in support of radiation safety excellence. Maintain in-person or remote annual Radiation Safety Training to improve stakeholder knowledge; work within current Quality/EHS management system and training platform to deliver and track. Work with Service Management to prevent the dispatch of untrained Customer Service Engineers. Liaise with managers, employees and contract workers to further integrate radiation protection policies and practices into the business.
  • Facilitate and/or lead the investigations of radiation safety-related incidents in pursuit of adherence to ALARA principles. Interface with employees, Supervisors, Field RSOs and permitting agencies as required to help manage.
  • Perform and continuously improve annual Radiation Safety Program compliance assessments. Maintain a register of radiation safety compliance obligations and assess company performance against them on an annual basis. Review Suppliers to ensure they also meet State and Federal Radiation Safety and other EHS requirements. Update support tools and Databases as required.
  • Work within an integrated environment, health, safety and quality management system to Continually improve Radiation Safety and associated EHS programs. track EHS metrics to identify trends, for adaptation to processes and organizational procedures and demonstration of improvements in the management system. Evaluate conditions, analyze performance, assess risks, and develop appropriate corrective-action / continuous improvement plans. Ensure issues with Radiation Safety and other EHS Programs are brought to the attention of appropriate supervisors/Management. Stop unsafe work practices. Assist with other Radiation Safety and EHS Programs.
  • As a member of the EHS/Q functional organization, contribute to regional North America and global level EHS and Quality initiatives. Work with external sources on environmental, health and safety matters including the impact assessment of new or changing regulatory requirements, for communication to the business. Collaborate with other internal and external stakeholders, providing EHS input and direction on the impact of new processes/products on the business; assist in engineering solutions or other EHS technical support to meet company objectives.
  • Contribute to the overall business strategy, including involvement in long-term planning to reduce overall EHS risks and achieve business sustainability objectives. Recommend and implement actions to minimize/eliminate workplace hazards and environmental impacts as well as achieve program cost improvements. Provide EHS recommendations for improvement to the Management Team on a continuous basis.
  • Perform other EHS related tasks and duties as they arise, to help support the field and Cary, NC Campus.

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

In order to meet the above responsibilities, the following are required:

Skills/Knowledge:
  • A self-motivated individual with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to prioritize tasks with input from line manager
  • Excellent verbal and written skills to succinctly and accurately convey the technical elements of regulatory and corporate programs to others inside of the organization
  • A collaborative approach to problem solving that identifies and incorporates stakeholders in the development of solutions that facilitate compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements
  • A high degree of ability to communicate using common MS Office programs such as word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs
Education & Experience:
  • Six to eight years of experience in applied radiation protection in a manufacturing facility or University setting handling similar nuclides and activities, or in operations at a radiochemical/radiopharmaceutical manufacturing operation, with responsibilities like above
  • B.S. in Radiation Protection (Health Physics), Occupational Safety, or other EHS related program of study, or an engineering/science major with direct experience
  • An advanced degree may be substituted for two years of experience

Preferred Knowledge/Skills and Experience:

The following are preferred for a highly qualified candidate:
Skills/knowledge as above plus:
  • Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Access and Power Apps
  • Experience with compliance auditing and/or gap analysis
  • Experience with a decentralized, large dosimetry program
  • Familiarity with US radioactive materials, X-Ray and OSHA/EPA regulatory framework
  • Previous support to field-based service environments.
