About This Position

Great opportunity for a person interested in both computer science and the biological sciences. The John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG) at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine is seeking a Programmer 2.

The Programmer 2 is a mid-level position focusing on the functional areas of programming. Under general supervision, codes and modifies moderately complex programs. Tests and debugs codes, maintains, and modifies moderately complex computer programs. Performs analysis and design of programs. Edits and approves user and application documentation for the use of new and revised systems, including operational documentation.


  • Analyzes user requests to determine parameters of required program, if a new program must be created or if an existing program can be modified.

  • Builds moderately complex user interface applications and back-end databases using mid-level skills in various web development tools, programming languages and scripting languages.

  • Designs, codes, tests, maintain, and documents moderately complex computer programs based on user requests.

  • Assists in analysis of existing software and hardware systems and procedures; recommends modifications or creations of computer programs and user procedures to best meet users' needs, makes recommendations regarding any needed changes.

  • Provides unique data and reports as requested by users.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a closely related field of study

  • Three years of relevant experience

  • Must have fluency in Java and related frameworks (Spring framework, Maven)

  • Strong front end development skills and knowledge in web technologies (JavaScript, HTML, JSP, JQuery)

  • Experience in developing backend functionality

  • Experience with databases required, Oracle strongly preferred (SQL, PL/SQL)

  • Experience in analyzing, developing, and testing software applications, the full life cycle

  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work with unfamiliar platforms, self-learner

  • Familiarity with code versioning tools (SVN)

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
