General Summary of Position:

The University of Massachusetts Lowell recently received through the U.S. Department of Education, the Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) grant, which aims to mitigate AAPI students' barriers to educational achievement by enhancing institutional programs and services.

The AANAPISI Program Assistant is a temporary, part-time, non-benefitted position working 18 hours a week. This role will be responsible for assisting in coordinating outreach and recruitment efforts to AAPI students, promote UMass Lowell's AANAPISI program, and supports the mission and goals of the AANAPISI five-year grant funded program. The aim is to increase AAPI college degree attainment and overall student success.

This position is contingent upon funding. This is a grant-funded, part-time, temporary, non-unit, non-benefited position. Continued employment is contingent upon grant funding. Position is in-person. Employment term duration: May 2024 - December 2024.

The AANAPISI Program Assistant collaborates with the Project Director, Program Coordinators, and campus partners to implement educational programs, provide culturally appropriate direct services to the AACEE student cohort program such as personal, cultural support and collaborate on facilitating career preparedness, student wellbeing and wellness, financial awareness & literacy, and identity development topics.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Assist in coordinating support services and educational programming under the Asian American Center for Excellence & Engagement (AACEE):

  • Assist Program Coordinator in coordinating programs that enhance Asian American student engagement and success.
  • Interact with the Lowell community to promote the AANAPISI program at community sites serving target populations.
  • Assist Program Coordinators in conducting outreach and recruitment efforts of AAPI students
  • Assist the development, implementation, and support of innovative practices, policies and programming that promote student achievement and degree completion with an emphasis on closing the achievement gaps in college completion.
  • Create an atmosphere for AAPI students to feel welcomed, supported, and comfortable; support OMA & campus strategies on student wellbeing.
  • Support cultural competency trainings for faculty, staff and students either individually or in conjunction with campus resources.
  • 2. Supervision and Data Management:

  • Under staff guidance, supervise AACEE student employees, volunteers, etc.
  • Coordinate the AANAPISI peer mentors, etc.
  • Maintain student files, coding and all paperwork.
  • Develop & execute communication plan & strategies
  • Support and assist with project reporting, including annual and quarterly reports, supervision of objectives and activities, fiscal oversight, coordination of professional development, and liaise externally with community organizations.
  • Supervise and maintain budget documentation
  • Support UML-AANAPISI reporting and data gathering strategies.
  • Other Job Duties:

    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Required):

    Education:

    • HS diploma or GED/equivalent required, Associate or college degree preferred.

    Experience:

    • 2-3 years' experience in an office setting, performing administrative tasks
    • Minimum of 1-2 years' experience assisting in developing, implementing, and evaluating high impact programs in a student engagement, activities or multicultural affairs arena.
    • Minimum of 1-2 years' experience with data entry and budget management
    • Knowledge of and sensitivity to AAPI issues and the educational needs of high-need AAPI students from diverse ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds.

  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Excellent collaboration, organizational, administrative, and communication skills; be able to be a self starter to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, cultural competence, and experience working with individuals and teams from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic and cultural backgrounds, especially including those with different levels of academic preparedness, learning & physical abilities.
  • Ability to provide guidance to various student cohorts, groups, and individuals to achieve their mission and goals. One should be collaborative and responsive to managing multiple relationships and projects, adapting to new priorities, and being responsive as needs change.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some experience w/ receivables and account reconciliation
  • Demonstrated success navigating educational systems and familiarity with student engagement topics; understanding of major trends and issues faced by AAPI students as well as historically underrepresented students.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Southeast Asian American students and communities.
  • Direct experience developing and implementing programs that support underrepresented students.
