MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Able to effectively communicate with plant process setup technicians and equipment operators to resolve issues either by phone or traveling to the operating plant
• Capable of assisting Product Development Engineers by applying plastics processing knowledge and experience to evaluate new products and make design recommendations to improve process capability on production equipment
• Able to work safely in an environment with industrial equipment
• Understand the safe operation of the Extrusion Blow Molding equipment and support equipment
• Demonstrate the ability to operate the above equipment in a safe manner consistent with manufacturers operating guidelines
• The ability to safely perform machine setups to achieve job changes as required to support manufacturing operations, or NPD projects
• Ability to read and understand product part drawings (bottle, closure, etc.) and specifications to understand what features are a critical part function and performance
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of plastic materials and processing requirements
• Ability to follow procedures to document whether process tests are a success or failure. Document the criteria for success prior to beginning process run
• Able to provide independent recommendations for product design or process changes to improve product or process based on process evaluations performed in Silgan Operations Plants
• Able to use MS Office based programs (primarily MS Word, Excel, and MS Project) to document results or process evaluations performed in Silgan Operations Plants
• Ability to determine when a process is in control after process adjustments are made prior to taking retained samples for evaluations. Ability to understand basic statistical concepts
• Ability to use test equipment for basic bottle measurements scales, calipers, optical comparator, magna mike, top load tester, etc.
• Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of extrusion blow molding equipment and support equipment when break downs occur. Address minor problems and contact service support for major issues.
• Able to travel to Silgan Plastics sites, suppliers, and customer facilities, if necessary, to support projects
• Operating Production machinery and auxiliary equipment
• Performing preventative maintenance Production and auxiliary equipment
• Perform Production machinery job changes and process set up
• Complete production plant service requests or CIP projects to resolve operations issues:
  • Verify Process Set up
  • Verify that the correct materials are being used and are properly prepared
  • Verify that equipment is functioning within appropriate operating conditions
  • Startup process on production machine and evaluate parts to determine if meets targets (Quality, Cycle time, efficiencies, etc.)
    • If yes, document process, observations, and recommendations in service report
    • If no, work with Operations Process technician to determine how to meet targets, document parameters for multiple process runs, document results, capture the information in service report
    • Document requirements or plans to resolve the issue
    • Work with operations to execute recommendations
  • Monitor the production quality of samples produced during process evaluations and sample runs
  • Use data (statistical methods) to determine the best process or quantify improvements
• Support PDE on new product startups
  • Target process parameters to develop process for new products
  • Determine the optimum process to meet product performance requirements
    • Document parameters used in multiple process runs
    • Document results based on container evaluations
    • Capture the information in process evaluation report
    • Document process window - key process variables
  • Communicate and document recommendations for product improvement
• Frequent travel to operation facilities to support production startup of products and processes development
• Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION:

Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. Ability to demonstrate proficiency in basic reading comprehension, writing and mathematics.

Preferred: Technical or Bachelor's degree

EXPERIENCE:

Required: 5 years of hands on plastics processing experience, machine operation and setup or hands on maintenance

Preferred: Process knowledge of plastics materials that includes evaluating the quality of product produced through testing and measurement.

SKILLS:

Required: Strong communication skills, dependable, safety minded, analytical, creative and detailed oriented. Works well independently and capable of clearly expressing thoughts and ideas to others. Ability to travel up to 75%
