Vertex is seeking an organic chemist to join the Process Chemistry Automation Lab, a recently established group within Process Chemistry. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to help build our state-of-the-art automation laboratory. As a member of the team, they will work collaboratively to develop safe, efficient, and robust synthetic routes to drug candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently design and execute high throughput experimentation (HTE) using laboratory automation to solve process chemistry problems

  • Develop new workflows with automation robotics, such as liquid handlers, solid handlers, high throughput analytical systems, and integrated robotic platforms

  • Clearly communicate HTE results to stakeholders using multi-dimensional data analysis tools (e.g. JMP, Spotfire)

  • Identify broad implications of data capture and data mining from HTE

  • Identify and advocate for innovative automation strategies to project teams

  • Provide training on automation equipment and HTE

  • Maintain laboratory automation equipment and develop new protocols

  • Collaborate with project teams in a cross-functional environment

  • Author or contribute to technical documents including regulatory submissions, patents, and scientific papers

  • Maintain a high level of expertise via relevant scientific and technical literature, and proactively apply new ideas to research projects.

  • Multitasks to effectively manage multiple activities/projects.


Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD (0+) or MS (4+) in synthetic organic chemistry

  • Experience independently planning, executing experiments, and interpreting analytical data (H/UPLC, NMR, MS, etc.)

  • Strong expertise in organic synthesis

  • Experience with any of the following: high throughput experimentation, laboratory automation (i.e. Chronect/QX96, Chemspeed, Unchained Labs, Hamilton, Tecan, etc.), biocatalysis, flow chemistry, cheminformatics, Python, reaction kinetic analysis

  • Strong organizational and communication skills
