Job Summary

This position is part of a diverse team of utility experts tasked with creating and executing on a best-in-class T&S asset planning strategy across AVANGRID. This role utilizes practical and analytic knowledge to perform needs and solution studies on T&S assets at all voltage levels including the development of mitigating projects and programs.

This role leads or supports all of the T&S Asset Strategy responsibilities including the following:

  • Execution of the AVANGRID Asset Management initiative in the electric networks organization.
  • Point for decision making and navigation of T&S projects through the Investment Planning process from inception through construction. This includes technical oversight of all projects, including legacy projects, through the various stages of design and construction.
  • Research, development, continual refinement, and execution of an industry leading T&S asset planning strategy.
  • Ensuring that T&S asset condition needs across AVANGRID are identified, prioritized, and addressed with appropriate mitigating solutions in a comprehensive manner.
  • Centralized oversight, development, support, and coordination of the T&S capital project portfolio ensuring they have been properly vetted and documented in support of prudent and defendable CAPEX investment decision making.
  • Anticipation, preparation and initiation of strategy discussions and activities as required to meet regulator, customer and key stakeholder expectations in support of business growth objectives.
  • Developing and building collaborative and constructive relationships with regulators and ISO's by ensuring proposals are thoughtful, prudent, and well documented.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic and Technical Leadership: Provides technical leadership of internal or external contractor teams working across multiple operating companies and geographic locations. Initiates, leads, collaborates or advises on a broad range of highly complex multi-disciplinary issues across electric Networks business areas such as Asset Management, T&S project technical review, System Topology design, Reliability and Resiliency, Equipment Standardization, Equipment Ratings, and Protection & Control. Provides leadership and facilitates collaborative decision making.

Communicate, influence and motivate: Use of excellent verbal and written communication skills with all levels of management to inform and influence others, providing strategic input for business plans and decision making. Serves as a witness on a broad range of regulatory and technical issues to advance business objectives (ISO's, siting council, PUC's, etc.). Represent AVANGRID in national and regional forums.

Predict needs, direct the development of solutions: Initiate and lead studies and activities required to identify issues and system needs, evaluate threats/opportunities, define and prioritize system-wide solutions based on risk, value and implementation complexity.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil, Structural or related Engineering discipline and 10 years or more experience. An advanced education such as an MBA and/or a Professional Engineering License is preferred.
  • Required experience may be in any combination of Transmission and Substation (T&S) planning, design, operations, asset management or maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a leading contributor across a diverse team responsible for solving unique and complex problems having a broad impact on the Transmission Business.
  • Working knowledge of local and regional processes (PUC, DPS, NPCC, NERC, ISO, etc.) along with utility design practices and standards (NEC, NESC, ASCE, etc.). Ability to anticipate business and regulatory issues.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of processes, methods, studies and activities required in the successful performance of this position's responsibility to (i) initiate, analyze and identify a holistic and in-depth view of potentially disparate transmission and substation system, infrastructure and customer needs, (ii) deliver a thoughtful, pragmatic and innovative approach to the consideration and evaluation of solution alternatives (wires and non-wires), and (iii) justify the selection of preferred solutions (projects and programs) and resulting investment plans.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing concise project justification and decision analysis, with documentation and communications at varying levels of detail and robustness to anticipate and meet the evolving and increasing expectations of our internal (Executives and Sr. Leadership) and external (Regulators, ISOs and other key stakeholders) reviewers and decision makers.
