GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under the supervision of the Nursing and Patient Care Services Senior Communication Specialist, this position is responsible for developing and implementing a wide variety of patient-facing communication materials, including web content, letters, emails, talking points, etc., across multiple vehicles, in support of the Office of Strategic Communication and other departments.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with superb writing skills, attention to detail and a passion for supporting our patients and their loved ones with clear and compassionate communication.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct patient communication: This position is responsible for developing a variety of patient communications, including letters and emails from the executive leadership team, in collaboration with the Office of the President and the Patient and Family Relations team. Specifically:

  • Creating and deploying customizable templates to be distributed by mail or email in response to a range of inquiries and messages from patients
  • Establishing a process for appropriately sharing positive patient stories across the Office of Strategic Communication and with colleagues throughout the organization.
Additionally, this role will support the Department of Quality and Safety in developing patient communication materials, including letters, emails and talking points, to support members of the department and other hospital leaders in responding to and addressing sensitive patient cases.

Support for employees interacting with patients: This position will support leaders and other members of the Brigham community in communicating with patients by creating talking points and other messages for members of our Patient and Family Relations team and other staff to use when discussing changes, sensitive issues or emergency situations with patients and their loved ones.

Marketing content development: This position is responsible for patient-facing content creation in support of our oncology marketing program for a variety of vehicles. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Identifying and concepting patient-facing communication opportunities in close collaboration with the Marketing Program Director for Oncology.
  • Interviewing subject matter experts, writing and editing a variety of patient-facing communications, including web content and patient education materials.
  • Creating social media content in collaboration with our social media specialist and senior graphic designer
  • Creating and updating content for Department of Nursing intranet and hospital website.
  • Serving as the team's primary point of contact with the Mass General Brigham marketing/digital team for requests and content development for the Brigham website.
Collaboration: The patient communication specialist collaborates closely with all members of the Office of Strategic Communication, particularly the Marketing Program Director for Oncology and members of the social media team in support of the oncology marketing program. The specialist is expected to attend routine team meetings to ensure coordination across the team. This role is also responsible for managing and deploying translation, as appropriate, for all individual and broad patient-facing communication materials.

Project management: This position may also be required to manage or support special projects, as needed, for key Nursing and Patient Care Services initiatives or other institution-wide projects.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

Requirements: 6 or more years' experience in content development, with proven skills in writing, crisis communication, editing and web content. Health care communications experience highly preferred. BA in communications, journalism or English with superior written, editorial, oral communication and project management skills required. Proven ability to achieve under deadline pressure and handle confidential and sensitive issues with discretion.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple initiatives and writing assignments while meeting hard-and-fast deadlines.
  • Ability to conduct interviews with subject matter experts and produce content for multiple vehicles and channels.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while working effectively under the pressure of deadlines and changing priorities.
  • A results-oriented and creative professional, with the ability to take initiative and function effectively, both independently and as a member of a team, with a willingness to assist with routine and last-minute projects.
  • Ability to use good judgment and handle sensitive and confidential issues with discretion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Role is currently remote, and a hybrid work model is anticipated in the near future, with some days working remotely and some on campus in a collaborative office environment. Work occasionally entails urgent or last-minute early morning or evening support.
