Department Information

As a part of the College of Arts and Sciences (the College), the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) is IU's home base for this interdisciplinary field with roots in psychology, physiology, physics, music, linguistics, and education.

SLHS faculty conduct clinical, translational, and basic research within 3 broad areas: Speech, Language, and Hearing. Their research reflects training and expertise in a very wide range of areas, including psychology, linguistics, physiology, and engineering.

More specifically, the individual hired for this role will work in the lab of Brielle C. Stark, PhD {she/her/hers}.

Dr. Stark is an Assistant Professor in the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Department and Program in Neuroscience at Indiana University.

Dr. Stark's research evaluates how aphasia impacts spoken discourse (language beyond the sentence level) and, more globally, communication, via 3 inter-related focus areas:

  • (1) characterizing language produced during spoken discourse using neuropsychological and neuroimaging methods.
  • (2) identifying the extent to which spoken discourse is supplemented by gesture.
  • (3) examining how preserved inner speech (our inner narrative) supports aphasia recovery.
Dr. Stark's research increases understanding of the fundamental aspects of spoken language and communication from an interdisciplinary perspective by leveraging theory and methodology derived from neuroscience, linguistics, communication sciences and disorders, and cognitive science.

Job Summary

This position will provide the right candidate with extremely valuable research experience and a chance to grow as a leader, investigator, and student. An ideal role for those seeking experience before entering a graduate program or someone interested in research and learning more about aphasia. This research is seeking an independent researcher interested in conducting science involving persons with aphasia (language disorder) and other brain injuries, as well as cognitively healthy older adults.

Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Leads a team of research assistants to investigate language and gesture use in people with and without aphasia as part of a large, NIH-funded grant project. This project is shared between Indiana University Bloomington and Carnegie Mellon University.
  • Works closely with the Principal Investigator to stay up to date with the latest research in the field.
  • Recruits and contacts new study participants via email to schedule research sessions.
  • Conducts virtual study sessions to administer cognitive assessments and collect narrative speech samples (you will be trained in how to administer these).
  • Builds conversational rapport and communicating 1-on-1 with people with aphasia and cognitively healthy older adults.
  • Completes scoring of cognitive assessments and updating data collection software with each participant.
  • Organizes and processes video and audio data using video compression and transcription software.
  • Keeps Principal Investigator informed of the process of data collection and subject enrollment status.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Associate's degree in a human science or person-facing profession, e.g., communication sciences, psychology, disability studies, nursing, etc
SKILLS

Required
  • Proficient communication skills
Preferred
  • Adaptable knowledge of technology and a willingness to learn new skills in programming and coding
  • Knowledge of the best practices when communicating with and working with people with communication disorders, and a willingness to learn
  • Independent and motivated working mindset to complete tasks without direct supervision
  • High level of self-discipline and time management to keep track of scheduling and data organization

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

This role is grant funded and will be in place for the life of the grant and/or until funding is exhausted.

Target start date: July 1, 2024

Work Location

This position is eligible for remote work, subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

Workspace available as needed at the IU Health Sciences Building located at 2631 East Discovery Parkway, Bloomington, Indiana 47408.

Advertised Salary

$19.00-$20.00 per hour with retirement eligibility after working 900 hours

Role not eligible for other benefits

Work Hours

This role will work up to 29 hours per week.

Schedule is flexible, dependent upon the work being performed, usually Monday-Friday 9:00 AM-5:00 PM.
