Job Description Summary

Under the direction of the team leader, the packaging operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and adjusting the packaging equipment in a manner consistent with production needs and quality standards.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

Maintains safe work practices at all times and participates in safety programs

Orders packaging material (paper, poly, carton) from storage as needed.

Ensures proper container sizing.

Records packaging machinery efficiencies, downtime and fills out reports accurately and correctly.

Responsible for insuring complete package quality of product taking regular checks of weights, seals, codes, glue patterns, etc..

Complete CIL's and Centerlines

Participates in AMD Drumbeats

Monitors line-flow rates:

  • Regular checks for proper feed of product through baggers for maximum efficiency.
  • Monitors and adjusts vibrators to gain optimum bagger performance. Includes continuous scraping to allow for optimum product level.

Monitors bagger operation:
  • Ensures by regular checks that baggers are being fed with enough product to run efficiently. Notifies team leaders of problems.
  • Checks bag weights and adjusts to meet Q.A. standards
  • Changes tape and wires on jaws
  • Changes paper and poly rolls.
  • Checks poly codes with Q.AE and continuously monitors for accuracy.

Monitors dyna-pack operation:
  • Adjusts for different fiber.
  • Adjusts chair
  • Supplies COPS with fiber.
  • Adjusts bag settlers as needed to minimize breakage

Monitors case settler operation:
  • Adjusts for different fiber.
  • Monitors headspace on cases and adjusts settings accordingly (compression, time and height)

Monitors case sealer operation:
  • Adjust for different fiber
  • Monitors and adjusts glue patterns.
  • Changes glue heads as needed.
  • Ensures proper sanitation and operation (changes or scrapes glue head and housing continuously).

Monitors Ink-jet coder:
  • Programs proper code statement.
  • Adjusts for optimum code placement and clarity on case.

Monitors line sanitation:
  • Keeps baggers clean of crumbs.
  • Cleans take-away belts.
  • Keeps floors clean of debris.
  • Cleans run-around system.
  • Insures all of packaging is clean and food safe.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This includes regular activities which are not listed under Essential Duties And Responsibilities. Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor.
  • Troubleshoots equipment operation: Able to identify mechanical and electrical equipment problems and take action by notifying proper personnel
  • Operates equipment with minimum waste.
  • Reworks product in an expeditious manner reusing fiber when appropriate.
  • Gives other employees breaks as directed by the team leader
  • Instructs packaging laborers, general laborers and temporary employees where and how to work to insure efficient operation of the packaging room as directed by the team leader.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or on-the-job type training along with Team Leaders help and instruction.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English. Ability to write accurate information on simple forms in English. Ability to effectively present or listen to information in one-on-one and small group situations with all other employees of the organization in English

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to slippery, wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or hazardous chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles such as fiber dust and tight confined spaces. The employee works near moving mechanical pans, in high places, and is exposed to extreme heat and cold alternating through each shift. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

100% of time for reading small codes. (Setting up coder blocks.) Must be normal and see clearly, with color.
  • COMMUNICATION (talk, listen, hear, read)
60-70% of time for wort instructions. pages, problems and coordination with team leaders, leads and package room employees. Must be able to articulate issues quickly and clearly.
  • STRENGTH
40% of time moving 36 pound cases, paper and poly rolls, lifting fiber into case COPs and moving 30-50 pound pallets.
  • STAND
100% of time on hard surfaces.
  • WALK
80% of time, must be able to move quickly across long distances and ascend and descend stairs, in a safe manner, to take care of problems.
  • SIT
Less than 5% of time on breaks only.
  • KNEEL
25% of time cleaning case sealers, baggers and picking paper and poly off of floor as well as general sanitation.
  • CRAWL
Less than 5% of time.
  • SHOVEL
15% of time cleaning around baggers, sealers etc.
  • STAIRS
60% of time checking bagger scales, scraping scales on scale deck constantly and working the palletizer/case accumulation area. Must be able to climb and descend in a timely manner.
  • HIGH CATWALKS
10% of time in palletizer accumulation area and behind L-4 scale.
  • LADDERS
15% of time threading baggers, cleaning high areas etc.
  • CLIMB/BALANCE
15% of time on ladders and scraping vibrators.
  • STOOP/BEND (bend at waist, bend at knees, and squat)
40% of time cleaning sealers out, walking under snake conveyors and for general cleaning.
  • REACHING (below knees, knees to shoulders, above shoulder)
70% of time adjusting and threading baggers, loading buckets on scales, scraping vibrators and case sealers, etc..
  • PUSH/PULL (Broom, tote, paper roll hoist)
30% of time moving full carts of product, opening bad boxes, sweeping floors, shoveling product, moving product in totes with rakes, and paper roll hoist.
  • FINE FINGER MANIPULATION (sorting fries or using required tools)
10% of time opening rework bags, cleaning glue heads, putting scales together, adjusting equipment with hand tools and setting up coder blocks.
  • HANDLING/GRASPING (power grasp)
15% of time using tools and scrapers.
  • REPETITIVE TASKS (back, shoulders, arms, hand, wrist, fingers)
20% of time shoveling, scraping, reworking product.
  • STAMINA (Physical exertion for a long period of time)
35% of time efficiently and safely being in control and regularly checking all areas in the packaging room which each employee is responsible for.

A reasonable hourly estimate of the range for this role based on the variables previously mentioned is: $18.60
