GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

We are seeking a motivated molecular biology research technician to join our next generation sequencing team at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. This individual will be responsible for helping with the daily lab operations in the core lab, including customer interactions, quality control of sequencing samples, operating the Illumina sequencing instruments, construction of sequencing libraries, and ordering supplies. The successful candidate will be able to operate, assist in, and learn to manage many projects at once, keep accurate records, and learn to execute complex molecular biology protocols in a robust and consistent manner.

The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills, be organized and rigorous, and have experience in modern molecular biology techniques (PCR, restriction enzymes, ligations, cloning). This is a rare opportunity to work closely with leaders in genetics, molecular biology, and medicine in a top research institution.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with these positions. Specific responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Similarly, not all duties that have been outlined will be assigned to each position.

  • Experience with or ability to learn DNA/RNA quality control and manipulations (qPCR, and Bio-analyzer profiling)
  • Prepares basic solutions and performs base-level procedures as assigned (i.e. - pipetting, cell and tissue culture, etc.)
  • Maintains laboratory notebook
  • Understands and applies basic scientific techniques
  • Conducts analysis of results and may begin interpretation of results
  • Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed
  • Prepares lab reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment
  • May perform independent literature searches
  • Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation
  • Maintains and orders supplies
Preferred experience with or ability/interest to learn:

• DNA library preparation workflows of different types, including RNA and DNA
• operating Illumina sequencing instruments

Those with more experience and ability to work more independently meeting the Tech II level requires will be considerd at that level accordingly.

  • Ability to begin to interpret acceptability of data results
  • At least a beginners working knowledge of data management programs
  • Demonstrated competence in research techniques and methodologies


Qualifications
EDUCATION:
  • BS in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related field is required.
    1+ years of experience in molecular biology is required; experience in next-generation sequencing workflows is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
  • New graduates with some lab experience (via course work, internships, etc.) is appropriate for this level position. Those with more experience and education would be considered for the next level Tech II role.

About Massachusetts General Hospital - Department of Molecular Biology
The Department of Molecular Biology (MOLBIO) at Massachusetts General Hospital is a part of both the research community of the hospital and the Division of Medical Sciences of the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Members of the Department carry out basic genetic and molecular biological research on a variety of topics at the cutting edge of the discipline. At present, approximately 170 people, including 13 faculty and over 85 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students comprise the Department of Molecular Biology. The Department is a major component of the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. All Molecular Biology faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students have concurrent appointments at Harvard, mostly in HMS Genetics. Massachusetts General Hospital has a long-standing relationship with Harvard Medical School.
