Network Security Engineer
General Position Summary:

The Network Security Engineer will provide operational support for Johns Hopkins enterprise-wide firewalls, IPSec VPNs and the enterprise wide segmentation efforts. The infrastructure supported by the engineer impacts everyone in all parts of the Johns Hopkins enterprise. The individual will be expected to work with more senior security engineers to review and implement requests to add, remove, and change configurations on production devices. The individual will take direction from and provide support to more senior security engineers.

This position provides direct support to internal IT customers with strong technical backgrounds and also must be able to work directly with end customers in the academic and medical communities, who have only limited technical experience. This individual must be able to work with these customers to meet their needs, while at the same providing guidance and insight to ensure that enterprise as a whole is not exposed to undue risk. This individual must also build effective relationships with other IT teams, vendors and customers. In providing support to customers, the individual must be able to gather technical requirements and effectively present them to Senior Security Engineers and other IT staff in support of efforts. The individual must also effectively document how devices are implemented, and maintain ongoing documentation of changes.

The Network Security Engineer I will be expected to make operational changes and provide support and troubleshooting for issues on the following infrastructure: Cisco ASA's deployed in HA, Palo Alto 5000 and 7000 series chassis firewalls in HA, Cisco IOS based IPSec VPNs, and Cisco Meraki's cloud-based infrastructure.

Participation in an on-call rotation for a week at a time approximately once every 2 months.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in IT or related field
  • 4 years full time at an Enterprise level information security work in two or more information security domains. (Enterprise Firewall Management, Intrusion Detection and Prevention, Network Forensics, Technical Risk Assessment, etc.)
  • Additional experience may substitute for education.


We are also looking for a strong foundation in one of the following areas:
  • Desktop computer support
  • Windows or UNIX/Linux server support
  • Network administration
  • VPN technologies
  • Firewall administration
  • Additional education may substitute for experience.


Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ability to understand firewall policy rules
  • Experience configuring IPsec network to network VPNs
  • Experience with Cisco Meraki
  • Experience with SIM/SIEM tools for traffic reporting and analysis (Splunk or Intel ESM preferred)
  • Unix/Linux user experience with shell scripting experience preferred
  • Entry level security certification, such as SECURITY+
  • Basic wireless networking knowledge for troubleshooting and configuration
