About the University and Department:

Boise State University has made a significant investment in the growth of the Department of Computer Science, with eighteen new faculty hires, a new building downtown, and several new undergraduate and graduate programs at both the Masters and PhD levels, including programs in Cybersecurity, Data Science, Computer Science, and CMSE. This investment has enabled the department to more than triple in size over the last six years to 26 faculty (19 tenure-track) with 100+ graduates each year.

Undergraduate enrollment has increased in the last six years from 268 to around 700 students at present. New undergraduate degrees in Computer Science have been created with emphasis areas in Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, Secondary Education, and Entrepreneurship. A new interdisciplinary PhD in Computing program was started in 2016, which has quickly grown to be the largest PhD program at Boise State with 67 students, and with faculty participation from a multitude of departments across campus. Thirteen PhD students have graduated and accepted research positions in industry and universities.

The College of Engineering and Department of Computer Science have a strong record of providing support and mentoring for early career faculty, and a number of resources that can be provided to assist early career faculty in establishing funded research programs. In the last six years new faculty have been very successful in obtaining external funding, with six new Computer Science faculty members currently holding NSF CAREER awards, and several other faculty have large grants from a variety of funding agencies.

The department is a critical part of the vibrant software and high-tech industry in the Boise metropolitan area, with close relationships with tech companies and a strong and active industry advisory board. In 2016 the department moved to a new building located in the heart of downtown Boise - within walking distance to dozens of software companies but still close to the main campus. The department's location in the heart of downtown allows faculty and students to interact frequently with the ever growing number of local software companies. Furthermore, the department has close relationships with Idaho's K-12 school system, and has been instrumental in developing and establishing K-12 computer science curriculum and standards, as well as establishing and supporting K-12 teacher training programs.

Boise State University is the largest university in Idaho, with enrollment of approximately 25,000 students and has the largest Computer Science department in the state. The university is located in Idaho's capital city and largest metropolitan area, which serves as the government, business, high-tech, economic, and cultural center of the state. To further enhance the quality of life Boise offers, the university has committed to sustaining the conditions necessary for faculty to enter and thrive in their academic careers while meeting personal and family responsibilities.

Boise State University is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty, staff, students, and academic program offerings and to strengthening sensitivity to diversity throughout the institution. Boise State University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer, and members of historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
