Position Overview

The Milling Crew Machine Operator will be responsible for the control and operation of milling equipment and ground controls, including operating a power broom and skid steer with various attachments, running grade control on milling machine, flagging, and laboring when needed.

Pay ranges from $26 to $31 an hour, based on experience.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Operate heavy equipment, safely and efficiently, of various sizes and weights used in road, site or highway construction, milling, and paving.
  • Maintains equipment in proper operating condition by performing simple preventive maintenance and repair tasks such as adjusting, fluid checks, replacing minor parts and lubricating equipment and reports problems to the Foreperson.
  • Perform daily pre-and-post inspections with appropriate documentation in compliance with company policies.
  • Operate and limit the amount of dust escaping during the removal operation.
  • Hauling and stockpiling or otherwise disposing of the milled material as instructed.
  • Able to remove existing asphalt pavement by milling to improve the ride ability and cross slope of the pavement, to lower the finished grade adjacent to existing curb prior to resurfacing, or to completely remove existing pavement.
  • Run small power tools such as jack hammer.
  • Dig, spread and level construction materials.
  • Lift, carry and hold materials, tools, and supplies.
  • Assist in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience
  • 1-3 years' experience and/or training in a related field preferred.
  • Experience in a road construction industry preferred.

Work Requirements
  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must maintain a current driver's license that meets state requirements.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work independently within in a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary; some overnight travel may be required.
  • Required to wear PPE in designated operations and production areas stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Understanding of aspects of the milling industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, job specifications, and other details related to asphalt milling.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions.
  • Must maintain an acute sense of awareness to the surrounding footprint of the machine (watch for obstructions while operating the equipment, such as ground utilities, curb, and gutters).
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions.

  • Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands.
  • The employee is occasionally required to crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hand and arms above their shoulders.
  • Must be able to exert 10-20 lbs. constantly to move objects, 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally.
