Job Summary:

The Dr. Bob Smith Health Center at SMU is seeking a Mental Health Clinical Case Manager. Under the supervision of the Director of Counseling Services, the Clinical Case Manager provides mental health referral coordination, and follow-up for SMU students who may wish to seek treatment off-campus or whose needs are beyond Counseling Services' scope of care. The Clinical Case Manager develops collaborative relationships with SMU campus partners and Dallas area therapist providers, provides consultation for staff, coordinates medical withdrawals, and assists in providing both crisis intervention and initial consultation screenings. The purpose of this position is to connect students with the resources they need to manage their conditions and enhance the likelihood of personal and academic success. The successful candidate will join a campus community that strives to be deeply supportive and conducive to positive mental health and wellbeing.

Essential Functions:

  • Case Management - Facilitate off-campus referrals for long-term, specialized/complex care and substance abuse. Track, monitor and follow-up on referrals to ensure continuity of care (includes psychiatric hospitalizations). Build/maintain a strong network of community providers, including openings and low-cost options. Manage referral data and reporting. Implement/maintain online referral platform.
  • Outreach and Liaison Responsibilities - Develop partnerships with agencies to help students access and utilize needed services. Actively develop and maintain relationships with campus and community resources. Serve as a contact point for external constituents (parents, hospital personnel and other community resources). Liaise with Residence Life & Student Housing to coordinate wellness and welfare checks.
  • Direct Client Care - Provide crisis assessment/intervention; assist staff during regular business hours in responding to students with urgent needs. Conduct Initial Consultations. Co-facilitate group therapy sessions as needed. Provide referral consultations. Collaborate with Eating Concerns Team (comprised of Medical and Counseling staff) to identify treatment options and assist with referrals.
  • Medical Withdrawals/Returns - Assist students with internal procedures related to requesting medical withdrawals for mental health reasons. Make contact and follow up with students returning from medical leave to ensure appropriate care/conditions are in place. Post hospitalization assistance and after care planning - serve as contact between the family and the University.
  • Other Departmental and Administrative Responsibilities - Actively participate in other departmental activities including staff meetings and departmental committees. Assist in outreach programs as needed. Maintain accurate and timely documentation for all referral and clinical interactions.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Master's Degree is required, with degree in Social Work, Counseling/Clinical Psychology or related field.

1- 2 years' experience is required providing case management, crisis intervention, counseling, and care coordination to young adults and/or college students. Three years of experience is preferred. Must be licensed in Texas as an LPC, LICSW, LMHC, LMFT, or Psychologist.

Experience working in a university counseling center is preferred.

Training and experience in brief therapy and group therapy is preferred.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with campus personnel, such as professionals in academic affairs and/or student life, is preferred.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians is required.

Experience providing culturally sensitive treatment to a diverse client population is required.

Advanced knowledge of case management best practices is required.

Ability to collect and report data is required.

Experience helping clients navigate insurance systems is preferred.

Understanding of the mental healthcare service delivery system is required.

Familiarity with and experience using an electronic health record is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, as well as the ability to develop partnerships with campus and community resources.

Candidate must have strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate and provide culturally sensitive treatment to a diverse client population.

Candidate must have well developed organizational skills that include effective planning, prioritization, and time management.

Candidate must have excellent project management and multi-tasking skills.

Must be accurate and detail oriented. Must be able to collect, analyze and report data.

Candidate must have strong problem solving skills.

Candidate must be experienced with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Must be familiar with using electronic health records.

Candidate must handle Electronic Medical Records and other private health information with complete confidentiality and adherence to legal and ethical principles associated with the field.

Must have a strong customer service orientation.
