We seek a dynamic and forward-looking marketing professional with an appetite for innovation to take on an exciting new marketing opportunity at Cell Press.

An exciting new opportunity exists to join the Cell Press marketing team to drive growth within our open access journal portfolio. You will be responsible for developing creative marketing strategies with a focus on segmentation, precision targeting, and innovative personalized author marketing to attract high quality submissions. You will need to interact and work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders within Cell Press and the wider organization.

To be effective in this high-profile position, you will need to work closely with the editorial team, data analysts, and external marketing agencies. You will also need to develop and foster partnerships with colleagues in marketing, media & communications, digital product, operations, and teams across our broader organization beyond Cell Press.

You will also have an opportunity to contribute to the overall digital marketing strategy of Cell Press, with a focus on author engagement and acquisition, customer journey mapping, lead nurturing / conversion, personalized communication, combined with a continuous test and learn approach. informed by data and analytics.

The position is based in the main Cell Press office in Cambridge, MA. We are also open to applications from candidates who would be based in other N. America locations (New York, Philadelphia), our UK (Oxford, London), or the Netherlands (Amsterdam).

Your responsibilities will include:

  • developing and executing innovative marketing strategies
  • creating methodologies for identifying compelling value stories in partnership with editorial colleagues
  • segmentation strategies to identify authors in high growth segments
  • partnering with data analysts to devise targeting strategies, and optimize based on a methodology of test, learn, and change
  • develop personalized communications, tailored to customer preferences and behaviors
  • leverage marketing automation technology to find creative ways to engage and nurture authors on the submission journey
  • partner with external brand agency to develop visually dynamic creative and messaging which is consistent with the Cell Press brand identity
  • establish KPIs aligned to business goals, use marketing analytics to measure effectiveness and track progress, pivoting when necessary based on insights from behavioral data
  • develop and effectively manage budget
  • drive strong internal communication, both to report on progress against target, and also showcase examples of innovation
  • be the project lead, and ensure alignment and buy in from the team on a regular basis
  • partner with colleagues in marketing, media & comms, and digital product, as well as colleagues in the China marketing team
  • represent Cell Press in developing new ideas and new ways of working as part of wider company projects.


qualified candidate is expected to have:
  • a University degree or equivalent (business management or marketing)
  • 3-5 years of relevant marketing experience, preferably in the STM industry
  • experience of Open Access publishing would be a plus
  • creativity and drive to devise and execute new approaches
  • an aptitude for managing projects and achieving broad stakeholder buy-in
  • proven marketing and/or product management skills
  • excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • good analytical skills.
  • experience working in matrix organizations involving marketing activities and/or customer marketing
  • a collaborative and solution-oriented mindset
  • strong interpersonal and networking skills
