Bard Graduate Center (BGC) is a graduate research institute in New York City. Our exhibitions, publications, MA and PhD degree programs, research initiatives, and public programs explore new ways of thinking about decorative arts, design history, and material culture. BGC publishes award-winning exhibition catalogues, books, journals, and digital publications focusing on scholarship in the decorative arts, design history, and material culture.

The Managing Editor has overall copyediting and proofreading responsibility for Bard Graduate Center Publications and supervises all matters related to the editing of materials for publication by BGC. Reporting to the Director of Publishing, the Managing Editor would join a small team working with faculty, students, and staff at BGC as well as with authors based in universities, museums, and research centers around the world. This is a full-time position with benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate the editing and proofreading of content for all BGC publications, including exhibition catalogues, scholarly books, journals, and digital or web-based publications, while meeting the highest quality editorial standards, adhering to publication schedules, and operating within the allocated budget.
  • With input from the Director of Publishing and other staff, prepare and monitor annual departmental budgets for copyediting, proofreading, and indexing.
  • Manage freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers. Hire and train new freelance editorial staff.
  • Create, communicate, and monitor schedules for all stages of editing and in coordination with design and production deadlines for published materials, managing staff/freelancer workload and adjusting for priority projects as needed.
  • Provide support to other BGC departments in copywriting and copyediting of catalog copy, website copy, and blog posts. Oversee design and typesetting of promotional and marketing material for publications and for the institution broadly. Maintain institutional style sheet.
  • Edit and proofread manuscripts as necessary.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • A minimum of 5 years of editorial and/or production experience in scholarly, trade, or art publishing.
  • Detailed knowledge of all aspects of the book editing process, including copyediting, proofreading, and indexing; knowledge of typesetting, design, art reproduction, and manufacturing processes.
  • Intimate knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Strong organizational and project management experience.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and effectively both in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with all colleagues and maintain productive working relationships with authors, freelancers, and vendors.
  • Interest in existing and emerging digital publishing technologies and evolving changes in book production workflows.
  • Working knowledge of current computer software and technologies related to editing.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience in an academic setting may substitute for minimum requirements.

Prefered Qualifications
  • MA or PhD in Arts or Humanities-related field.
  • Previous experience as a Managing Editor.
