Executive Summary of Position

Under the direction of the Quality Director for the Harvard Ophthalmology Data Science Research group, the Manager will serve in the dual role of Lead Biostatistician and Data Science Team Manager. Duties include supervising the data science analysis team comprised of biostatisticians and programmers as well as prioritizing, assigning, and coordinating projects. This individual will also function as the lead biostatistician and be responsible for cleaning many clinical data sets/databases including the IRIS database, the MGB Research Patient Data Registry (RPDR) and the MGB Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), configuring them for analysis, analyzing data, generating data visualizations, and contributing/drafting manuscripts and submitting publications. This individual will collaborate with Ophthalmology faculty members, researchers and Information Systems staff to perform this work.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Quality Director for the Harvard Ophthalmology Data Science Research group, the Manager will serve in a dual role, reporting to the Quality Director for Ophthalmology. The Manager performs all duties with minimal supervision and must be able to work independently.

This individual will function in a managerial role that includes supervising the data science analysis team comprised of biostatisticians and programmers (approx. 4 staff) as well as prioritizing, assigning, and coordinating projects. The Manager of this group will be responsible for team supervision, work assignment and project delegation, and quality control of all code and all statistical interpretations. The Manager will meet frequently, at least once per week, with the members of this team. The Manager will meet weekly with the Quality Director to update that person of team progress. Of note, all members of the team continue to report directly to the Quality Director.

This individual will also function as the lead biostatistician and data scientist and will be responsible for cleaning many clinical data sets/databases including the IRIS database, the MGB Research Patient Data Registry (RPDR) and the MGB Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), configuring them for analysis, analyzing data, generating data visualizations, and contributing/drafting manuscripts and submitting publications. This individual will collaborate with Ophthalmology faculty members, researchers and Information Systems staff to perform this work.

BACKGROUND:Massachusetts Eye and Ear has been granted access, as part of a national application process, to the IRIS Registry database. This is a national ophthalmology database with approximately 60 million patients and 350 million visits that can be accessed for research purposes. It is the largest subspecialty database in the US. Other databases utilized include the RPDR and EDW, which are internal data repositories used for clinical research purposes on a variety of questions. Team projects will answer diverse questions within ophthalmic sub-specialties, with a focus on clinical outcomes. The Data Science group consists of biostatisticians and programmers and is led by the Quality Director, but supervised closely by the Manager. The role requires extensive interaction with many parties including Information Services, MEE and MGB clinical and research faculty, and external parties such as other academic research centers within the U.S.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

As Manager:

  • Organize, assign and track all ongoing data science projects within the team/center, while ensuring that all members of the team are comfortable and engaged with their assigned projects.
  • Assist, guide, and mentor all members of the data science analysis team to foster a strong collaborative research environment.
  • Manage research projects and data science initiatives by coordinating and interacting with both clinical staff and data science team members within MEE, MGB and nationally.
  • Act as a bridge of communication between clinical staff and data science analysis team members by communicating project updates, results, changes, or other important information to all staff members involved.
  • Communicate and collaborate with data science staff and database managers from other institutions whenever necessary.
  • Coordinate with senior leadership at MEE to ensure research objectives are being met, and provide them with summaries of the team's projects and work on a regular basis
  • Ensure the highest data quality and integrity possible by working closely with both clinical staff and data science analysis team members throughout the entirety of the research project process.
  • Is key member of all project plan teams; works closely with lead faculty to clearly define data needs and determine analysis methodology throughout the life cycle of the project.
  • Identify new potential data sources and projects by actively engaging in department meetings and events with clinical staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining a strong working knowledge of all major databases and data sources which the data science team uses; keeps current on all database and code related developments and new releases.
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation and writing for all relevant research projects, and oversee data science team members' contributions as well.
  • Conceptualize novel research hypothesis independently and act as the lead investigator and senior author on these projects.
  • Participate as a member of the overall program leadership group to plan for the future direction of the group's work.


  • As Lead Biostatistician and Data Scientist:
  • Maintain active engagement in research projects by taking on projects and being actively involved in the research conducted within the center.
  • Possess a strong understanding of both statistical and data science concepts, methodologies, techniques, and programming languages.
  • Provide useful data visualizations and summary reports to clinical staff.
  • Effectively engage with both technical and non-technical colleagues about complex topics.
  • Communicate with clinical investigators to determine appropriate statistical analyses and discuss results
  • Contribute to methods and results sections for publications using these data, and other sections as needed.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into easily understandable results and conclusions.
  • Possess strong writing skills.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.


  • Qualifications
    Qualifications
    • Masters or PhD level Programmer (R experience preferred) with data management and analysis experience required.
    • Candidate should be comfortable with epidemiological study design.
    • 2-3 years of post-grad working experience preferred but recent graduates with research project experience eligible to apply.
    • Background with big data beneficial but not required.
    • Background with writing an academic paper for publication preferred.
    • Excellent communication (oral and writing) skills
    • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to maintain detailed records of study data
    • Excellent interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
