Purpose of the role

As part of the RSG Accounting and Compliance Team, the Finance Manager performs high-level accounting/financial functions including financial analysis, performing advanced research, developing process improvements, participating in audits and various other financial/accounting tasks. The Manager will be responsible for accurate and timely execution of financial closes, associated financial reporting and variance analysis, compliance with accounting policies and procedures, balance sheet review and forecasting, cash flow analysis, and special projects (as needed).

This position leads and develops team members and works closely with peers within Accounting and Finance to maximize efficient and effective delivery of accounting processes for areas of responsibility. The Manager must have the ability to collaborate with other finance teams such as Decision Support and be able to successfully work with organizational leaders and be expert in tactical support of overall strategies, identifying trends and financial drivers, and improving processes. The Accounting manager will coordinate and assist in Reforecasts/Budget for various balance sheet accounts.

Primary Accountabilities:

  • Specific areas of responsibility will include but is not limited to cost of sales, capitalized development, fixed assets, and IFRS-16 leases.
  • Execute monthly record-to-report processes for each area of responsibility; specifically accurate and timely financial reporting and analysis including support of the quarterly consolidations to RELX (REQIS), statutory and tax reporting, and cash flow.
  • Managing and training the team:
    • Strong management skills to manage and train a team of 3 direct reports and work closely with a team of 7 in the Philippines to deliver the monthly responsibilities. Recruit and train any new starters into the team, as necessary.
    • Encourage personal development to stretch and grow the team professionally.
    • Understand the relevant technical accounting guidance and procedures affecting each area of responsibility.
    • As required, apply new accounting standards and ensuring that this knowledge is shared with the team.
    • Responsible for adherence to accounting policies and procedures and maintaining knowledgeable staff capable of sustaining a clear balance sheet position and associated internal control activities for areas of responsibility.
    • Promote employee engagement and personal development by coaching and motivating team members in their areas of responsibility.
    • Communicate the vision and the lead team in accomplishing team plans and goals.
  • Supporting a strong controls environment:
    • All reconciliations allocated to the team are completed, reviewed, and approved within deadlines using Blackline (or equivalent) as an enabler.
    • Understand and support external, internal audit and RELX (corporate parent) demands, and deliverables as needed for area of responsibility.
    • Lead the quarterly Capital Development impairment review meetings with the Finance VPs and other business partners. Minute and send to the Head of Accounting for sign off.
  • Continuous improvement:
    • Foster an environment of continuous process improvement identifying and implementing change in area of responsibility.
    • Identify quick wins or areas which could be automated via the use of robotics (RPA).
    • Actively participate in the new RELX Finance system project as required.
  • Build on and strengthen two-way relationships with Finance and business colleagues.

Ad hoc work:

  • Involvement in acquisition or disposal activity from an Accounting & Compliance point of view including accounting, controls, and governance requirements as applicable to your areas of responsibility.
  • Key involvement within wider finance projects in relation to system changes or upgrades.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of progressive and diverse accounting and financial analysis experience
  • BA/BS, Accounting/Finance
  • MBA and/or certification preferred, i.e. CMA, CFA or CPA
  • Strong managerial skills including ability to manage through change and ability to work with all levels throughout the organisation
  • Solid understanding of financial analysis, delegation, tactical decision making and problem solving
  • Awareness of internal controls and SOX compliance requirements
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Ability to work on multiple workstreams, prioritizing the time allocated to each as needed
  • Proven experience of working in a commercially focused finance team, preferably in a fast paced, multi-site, large company
  • A high degree of commercial acumen is essential, together with the ability to think through the numbers and communicate effectively the interpretation of key issues in a clear, concise manner
  • A rigorous mind-set and the ability to deliver timely and insightful information
  • Good influencing skills with senior managers and the senior leadership team, using clear logical data presented in a structured manner that shapes business decisions
  • Team player and be able to work well across different geographies (predominately US/UK/Philippines) and understand the cultural differences
  • Ability to work well under pressure and looking for a new challenge
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and relationship building capabilities with the ability to quickly form working relationships and gain credibility with others
