A Life Science Technician 3 position is available immediately in the Chiu Lab, Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery at Stanford University. Our lab uses different mouse models of pediatric solid tumors and we apply novel treatment protocols to assess effectiveness. We are also interested in molecularly targeted diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, with the goal of translating our research into clinically feasible solutions for children with solid tumors. Aligned with this goal, the successful candidate will be involved in preclinical studies of novel therapeutic agents, including efficacy and toxicity studies in cell lines and patient-derived xenograft models of pediatric solid tumors, as well as mechanism of action studies or immunology studies of promising therapeutic agents.

Responsibilities are as follows:

  • Independently procure, prepare, and process live mice for research surgery and mice post operatively. This includes measuring and inking specimens. Responsible for preforming the surgeries as well as identifying relevant surgical margins.
  • Train and supervise LST 1 and 2 staff in performing ultrasound scans on intra-abdominal tumors developed in mice, involving anesthesia administration, monitoring, positioning, using a 3D ultrasound probe, acquiring tumor images, and measuring tumor volume using ultrasound software. Train staff in cell culture techniques, including maintaining different cell lines, propagating and expanding them, and freezing cells for storage, while strictly adhering to sterile procedures. Ensure a safe work environment through participation in lab safety programs and audits.
  • Independently develop experimental protocols and conducts data analysis. Ensure the accurate and timely recording of all surgical collections, including tissue and blood samples, and organizes the data and documents in the RedCap database. Additionally, verify data entries to ensure accuracy and compliance with IRB guidelines.
  • Supervise LST, LSRP, interns, and students, providing on-the-job training on various techniques and procedures. This includes training on tasks such as ordering lab supplies, equipment repair and certification, maintaining inventory of cell lines, and performing housekeeping duties. Act as the technical resource for the laboratory in areas of mouse survival surgery and animal care. Manage responsibilities and serve as a consultant for other collaborating laboratories.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree or three years of laboratory experience or three years of college coursework in the scientific discipline, a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience.
  • Previous experience working with animals, including handling, caring, and minor procedures. Experience with cell culture techniques, small animal ultrasound, and statistical analysis. Excellent communication skills and skilled in working with lab group are a plus.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Three years' experience at the Life Science Technician II level or equivalent combination of equivalent academic background and relevant work experience (e.g., three years of college science coursework).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

    The Technician at the III level is required to have a higher degree of skill than the LST II (for independently performing highly skilled work) and sufficient knowledge of skilled procedures that s/he is able to troubleshoot problems which arise in either equipment or procedures.Technicians may also have highly specialized expertise in a particular technical area, or experience coordinating a variety of technical activities in a lab.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

The expected pay range for this position is $40.75 (Step 1) to $49.13 (Step 10) per hour.
