Job Description:

Central College seeks applicants (Ph.D. in sociology preferred; ABD considered) for a Lecturer of Sociology beginning in August 2024 to join a dynamic and collaborative team of faculty committed to student success and to each other's professional development.

Consistent with the college's mission of "empowering graduates for effective service in local, national, and international communities," the mission of Central's sociology program is to prepare Central College students to apply sociological knowledge, insights, and analysis for a lifetime of engaged service to their families, vocation, communities, and the world. To fulfill our vision of empowering students to understand and explain the complexity of social life and facilitate positive social change, the Sociology program at Central provides students with a broad background in sociology.

Students complete courses examining major institutional contexts such as education, family, and religion, in addition to courses focused on inequalities based on race, gender/sexuality, and social class. The sociology major is one of the largest majors on Central's campus. The program has robust enrollment in our courses and a sustained record of success in preparing majors for a wide range of career paths. In addition, our sociology graduates regularly enroll in master's programs in counseling and social work. The sociology program combines theoretically rigorous content with applied research opportunities. In addition, most sociology majors at Central engage in community-based learning and/or internships.
