Job Description

The Mechanical Testing Technician is responsible for the inspection and mechanical testing of the test specimens and materials. The position is focused on the correct testing of specimens to comply with internal procedures, industry standards, and written instructions. The individual will interface with internal customers of the mechanical laboratory in such a way as to promote teamwork and cooperation among all of the related departments. Candidates will be expected to support SGS in such a manner as to fulfill the company's mission statement, quality objectives, and safety objectives.
The Mechanical Testing Technician plays a key role in the integrity, accuracy, and on-time performance of the laboratory as a whole. The job duties for this position are the final critical step in the testing process after, in many cases, extensive cutting, and machining in the shop area. Mechanical Lab technicians are expected to be diligent and thorough in their understanding of the specific testing needs in order to assure that the
customer's needs are fully satisfied. Correct processing at the critical final stage is critical to maintaining integrity and trust of the mechanical lab and the laboratory as a whole.
Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Read and understand written instructions
  • Follow test preparation and testing procedures to ensure compliance to standards and specifications per the SGS quality system
  • Adhere to all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures for health, safety, and environmentalcompliance
  • Provide technical support and assistance to staff and engineers
  • maintain and clean laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Be crossed trained in other departments as needed
  • Communicate with staff and supervision to ensure proper order processing
  • Train new employees as required; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Mechanical Testing Technicians will be required to operate: Tensile machine load frames and software Metal cutting band saws Charpy impact machines and software Abrasive cut-off saws Rockwell hardness machines Heat treatment furnaces Brinell hardness machines Related hand tools and equipment Sheet metal shears


Qualifications

  • Two to four years related experience and/or training; equivalent of education and experience; or college or university program certificate.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
  • instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively in one-to-one situations with customers or employees of an organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concreted variables in standardized situations.
  • Physical Factors and Working Conditions
  • The employee is occasionally required to work near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outdoor weather conditions. Noise level is moderate
  • This position frequently requires the employee to stand, and walk
  • The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk/hear.
  • The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • The ability to understand how to move items weighing up to 5,000 pounds safety.
